Rs 1,000 salary compensation in January 2023
Public and private sector employees will get a salary compensation of Rs 1,000 in January 2023. The decision was communicated this week by the Minister of Finance. This, following the tripartite meeting with trade unions and employers' representatives. The government will help Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) pay this compensation.
This amount has been calculated based on the inflation rate projected by Statistics Mauritius to the end of December 2022, which is 10.7%. This amount will compensate one third of the loss of purchasing power.
The Minister also announced that the minimum wage will increase to Rs 13,075 in January 2023. The CSG Allowance of Rs 1,000 will be maintained at least until June. However, pensioners will not receive any increase. An increase in the old age pension will be considered in the next Budget 2022-23.
According to the Bank of Mauritius (BoM), this wage compensation will cost companies Rs 4.2 billion.
