Hello everyone,

Living in Kenya provides countless occasions to browse local newspapers, listen to local radio stations or watch local TV shows. As everywhere else in the world, local media play a key role in informing the public.

What are the major media in Kenya? Which one do you use on a regular basis?

How do you keep up with international issues (newspapers, radio, TV, Internet)?

Mainly rely on the internet and international magazine such as Times, Newsweek and Economist, though pricey

The major media in Kenya are the newspapers; Daily Nation, East African Standard and a few others, which don't sell as many.聽 There are also the TV channels;聽 KBC, NTV, Citizen (Royal Media), K24 being the major ones.聽 Mostly local news items and comment, with a heavy political bias.聽 International news is usually confined to a one page round up.

Local channels tend to focus on Kenyan news, with international news being (often briefly) well down the programming agenda, unless it is a very major event.聽 You won't really get a sense of what is going on outside the country, but you will become an expert on politics, which is often what the news leads with.聽 News is presented in both Swahili and English (at different times).

Digital TV providers often provide some international news channels.聽 We have 'Startimes', which has BBC international and Al Jazeera, plus South African News, for example.

Satellite TV is available (at considerable cost) via DSTV, a South African service provider.聽 This gives quite a broad choice of news programming, such as Sky News, CNN,聽 BBC, Al Jazeera, to name a few.
