I am from South Africa and taking a huge leap moving to Mauritius in July.
I am a remote worker and will be setting up somewhere in the North or West to have access to everything that I would like nearby.
Being 64, this will be one of my most exciting challenges to date as I've not lived anywhere else in the world, but having visited Mauritius on a few occasions, I know this is where I want to live out my days.
I will be applying for the Retiree Permit as soon as I have the final documents available.
I am hoping to find an apartment where I will be able to literally walk onto the beach, and however hard that will be, it is definitely not something that I am willing to compromise on.
Any guidance and help from the community will be appreciated.

Hello! I'm Gaya and I've just moved to Mauritius. I'll be here for a couple of years (or more). It's been fantastic biking around the north. The beaches are incredible. I'm looking to find an apartment and can't decide if I should stay in the north or move to the west. Looking forward to catching up with others and finding a community of digital nomads here.

Howdy, I signed up to try and connect with some people from this country since I heard about this Island. I myself was born in an island (not Mauritius) and I am just trying to satiate my Islander spirit hopefully end up moving here but have to scout the place first. Hi , My husband and I and two dogs have moved from Orlando USA to Mauritius and spent some months here when we聽 came to look at the Island and more recently in February 2022 to move into a home which we bought off plan in August 2021. We are Australians who lived in Orlando for three years whilst traveling the World.

We really noticed that little information was known about anything to do with Mauritius USA travel, we were given ridiculous high quotes for container travel from Orlando to Mauritius, also pet travel information was wrong even when going to reputable companies.聽 Also the whole residency process can take months and we still re waiting from December to now to get ours, so much for easy for retirees.聽聽Not to say we aren't happy here it's just a big adjustment in culture. Island time and people just saying what you want to hear rather than honesty, lots of deception by omission.

Our container cannot leave USA until we get residency paperwork costing us dearly. If it left without this it would cost duty and fees of approx 50% extra on value of goods.

Anyway happy to answer any questions, but do suggest you spend time looking for a home we can recommend a really great young man as an agent as he really gave 120% in service and found a home which 100 percent had everything we wanted and was well built too.

We bought in the North in Grand Baie which has the right infrastructure for us, shops, both expensive and cheap, lots of services and restaurants.聽 Nothing is far here as its a small Island.

Also medical Insurance does not exist for any pre-existing conditions. I have any so was a little shocked to find this out after we arrived and had committed to the move. Again also information given on internet.聽聽Medical here is good quality, even specialists can be seen in a few days and cost a little more than GP's聽 but nothing like the USA or Australia as non insured. GP's cost less than my co pay in Australia. Also cheap are medicines, as Government subsidies it all.

Food and vegetables, eggs and many other items are delicious as they have great soil here and limited chemicals. I always feel like I have transported back to childhood when my father grew all our veggies and fruit.聽 Also French influence here if massive, so beware of the sweets!!! Just too good.

We bought a lot of furniture here and the electrical items and have some great contacts and can give you prices to compare what you should pay.聽 People do give discounts but often have to ask the owner who is normally off site.
