Houses with burglar bars

Good evening.

I was wondering why there are so many houses with burglar bars for rent or sale.聽 Is it the area? Is it the norm to have these?

I see some properties have alarm systems aswell?

Advise on this would be appreciated.

Hello there,

It has become the norm now due to the rising cases of thefts (nearly everywhere on the island).

Mauritius has changed over the years (higher cost of living, drugs issues etc) . Better you get a house with bars for peace of mind and to deter burglary.

In the developments there seem to be no bars - they have security I guess - is robbery still a problem in those areas in your opinion?

I think that for houses built in gated community where there's a security guard posted, it might not be relevant. Personally, as I mentioned in another thread i am in the process of building, i will get bars fixed only for the ground floor... (for the time being) we'll see how it goes.

It is still a problem, thefts are on the rise

I guess it's also a perceptions thing.

If your used to zero crime.. and now on the island there's some crime. It might feel bad. But if you come.from Europe where crime聽 is common .. to me the island feels very very safe.
