I've never been poisoned, robbed, kidnapped or murdered any of the times I've gone to China.聽 It's actually one of the safer places anyone can go to.

China has a very long list of problems.聽 Personal safety isn't one of them.

Wednesday night I took a foreign colleague (as per his request and I quote "the trashiest part of Shenzhen") to Buji Zhen in Longgang, Shenzhen. By far the worse looking place in Shenzhen as far as I know.
Sure as shite he was in awe of the squalor and disrepair of the back alleys and roads. As we ended the tour and returned to rented car I drove. He went on and on about how nasty it looked. He said it was worse than Jamaica or Cuba (both infamous for their poverty and lack of hygiene). As he went on ranting and raving at his incredulous tour on foot through the alleys. He commended me for enduring 2 years in such a place and as he did he paused... then realized... something even more impossible. Not for one moment did he fear for his life as he did in Cuba or Jamaica. He asked if it was a fluke that we were not attacked or hurt. It was 2am and he was sure it was pure luck considering the filth and decay of the area. I was very clear and honest that I was never attacked but actually welcomed into the neighborhood. That I never once in felt as if there might some sort of danger. I offered this reason for the difference between Jamaica or Cuba and Buji. As poor and crappy Buji may appear...that's not what counts... its the people who live in Buji. Buji is a working class neighborhood, maybe a very poor working class area for even Shenzhen. But the people work hard everyday, they're family people, children play in the alleys in the day where rats scurry at night and cats stay away till morning. It's a neighborhood grandparents who remember Shenzhen when it was mostly farmland and one dirt road stretched and winded from Longgang to Bao'An.
I attest safety in China to its common people, not government policies or police. People please ignore idiotic news reports about safety in China...
Remember almost the entire population of a country the size of Canada can be found in the city of Guangzhou and if you include Foshan and Dongguan the number of people surpass Canada. As we all know those 3 cities are a tiny fraction of what the Chinese government manages daily.
So a news report here and there about corruption and kidnapping can almost be assumed when a third of the worlds population live within one country.
So when ignorance is put aside and the world opens its eyes and mind it will realize there is no perfectly safe place... I however feel safer here in Shenzhen, China than I did ever in the US or most places.

I wanna thank miahkg for the ignorant comment... its given us a chance to defend a country that deserves to be seen with fresh eyes and an open heart and refute such comments.

I wasn't all that impressed with Macau.聽 I guess if you like gambling, it's the place to go in China, but there wasn't much else to offer.
