From Jakarta to KL – Starting a new chapter

petrusariwibowo

Hi everyone,

My name is Petrus (you can call me Ari).

I’m from Indonesia and currently working in the IT/Banking industry with more than 15 years of experience, focusing on card & transfer services, API integration, and system development.

Recently, I received an employment offer from a bank in Kuala Lumpur and I’m currently in the process of obtaining my Employment Pass (Category 1).

If everything goes well, I plan to relocate to KL with my wife and daughter in early 2026.

This will be our first time living in Malaysia, so I’m very happy to learn from everyone here about:

    •    Areas/neighbourhoods recommended for young families

    •    School options for toddlers

    •    Practical tips for settling in KL (banking, transport, etc.)

    •    Community or cycling groups (I’m also a bicycle mechanic/content creator 😄)

Really looking forward to connecting, learning from your experiences, and hopefully making some new friends when we arrive!

Thanks and warm greetings, everyone. 🙌

Ari

Hi Ari,

My name is Dave from UK living in KL my wife is from rural East Java from a village which is focused around fishing/farming.

I guess for area it depends because Desa Park City is popular with families but there is not much public transport there.

You could consider somewhere with access to public transport like TTDI, Bangsar South. TTDI is more expensive than Bangsar South so depends on your budget.

Hello Ari,

Narelle here. Expat in KL for 16 years now.

From experience, in picking a place to live, I would say you should pick a place where your wife and children would have a community that they can be a part of (if they want to, of course) and that has convenience and amenities all around. As for you, you can drive to work, no problem. Best not to choose a house close to work not unless you work in KLCC, Bangsar or Damansara Heights.

Desa Parkcity is newish, new money and very popular with young families. It is self sufficient and close to a huge nice shopping mall (One U). We live here and we like it.

About 'Damansara', when looking at properties, do note that Damansara Heights (Bukit Damansara in Bahasa) is a leafy, old money neighbourhood in KL.

All other Damansaras are in Petaling Jaya (referred to locally as PJ) or in the Selangor area! Examples of these Damansaras include Kota Damansara, Ara Damansara, Mutiara Damansara, Bandar Sri Damansara, Damansara Jaya, Damansara Kim, Damansara Uptown, Damansara Damai... I can go on 😂 so please please remember it is only Damansara Heights or Bukit Damansara that is in KL. Dm if you need help.

@daviddomoney

Thank you so much for sharing your insights! Really appreciate it.

I’ll definitely look into the areas you mentioned TTDI, Bangsar South, and Desa Park City. I’m still trying to balance convenience, family-friendly environment, and budget, so your perspectives are very helpful.

This is our first time relocating as a family, so we’re still learning a lot about KL neighborhoods, schools, and transport options.

If you have any other tips for newcomers with a toddler, I’d be glad to hear them.

Hi Narelle,

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and detailed insight really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!

Your point about choosing a place where my wife and daughter can have a community around them makes a lot of sense, especially since this will be our first time living in KL.

Desa ParkCity sounds very family-friendly, and I’ve heard great things about it too. We’ll definitely keep it in mind, along with Damansara Heights.

We’re currently considering areas within our budget that also offer convenience, so your tips are really helpful.

Thanks again and would love to reach out if I need more advice!
