Hello All ! Contemplating move to KL- Need your help

mr_maker

Hello All,
Thanks for the wonderful platform for sharing thoughts, questions and concerns.
Like everyone else on the forum, i'm here looking for help.

I'm a Technical Architect, 12 yrs in the IT industry. I've been approached by a consultant to work for Malaysia's 2nd largest Bank in KL.

This is a contract to hire position, about 18k salary. I have some questions :

1. Is it ok to accept contract to hire opportunity in KL, what are the downsides ?
2. Is this a decent salary, my wife and my 2 year old will accompany me
3. Whats the work culture like in KL ? I have lived and worked in US and Singapore for several years
4. I heard contracts are exploited ?
5. Any other things to watch out for before i sign on the dotted line ?

Appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi well I am out if date 10 years but ten years ago I would have said too low a salary with your experience assuming you are good. However from posts here send rates are way down and the western depression has had its affect.

on this site you will get "wow so much" but in reality after tax, decent condo a nightlife plus at least one car (two better as you have a wife) it is enough to live ok, couple of holidays and save a little but easy to spend it all. Ten years ago as a single I spent 12k a month on an ok lifestyle these days I spend less as I earn less as not in IT/banking anymore. But that means being careful. Babies are expensive!

As for contracts they are not worth the paper they are written on. In Malaysia you sign one then negotiate the real terms lol.

Your experience here depends on your coworkers. If all western/Indian /sinaporean etc good. If locals range from good to awful lazy attitude. Don't expect meetings to start anywhere on time and anyway all decisions are made out of meetings. Meetings are simply to show authority and waste time talking. expect to be shocked! Project timelines are fairy stories and everything will cost 3 times as much as it should.

Like 22,000 rm for a computer chair (really at one of Malaysians leading investment banks).

Have fun!

Hi Maker
I see that you are from Bangalore. I believe this should be a self assessment on your part. How much are you getting presently and How much are you able to save.
Life here is not expensive if you know how to manage your money.
18k will be nice salary untill your son starts going to school.
Although I have not experienced it yet but all my fellow expats have mentioned school fees as a killer here. So thats another thing you will have to carefully research about.
As far as working on contract is concerned, almost 90% of us here are working on contract based jobs only. So just dig in.. Dont worry about it. Here they hire expats only if they really need them. So if you are hired, it means there's a definitive position typically suited to you. Plus its a bank job.. Its considered to be more secure sector than IT itself..
Invite other expats to share their views..
Cheers..!
