Hi Kevin and welcome to the forum.

We are in Bacnotan La Union on the beach, now and then we sit on the beach and throw in a couple of lines, tried lures, bait etc. and resigned ourselves to sitting on the beach having a drink and laugh and as you say watching the sun set.

Here the fishermen in Banka boats are out at daylight and disappear by 10am and they fish 1 to 200 metres off shore. 4 am others with torches are closer to shore but catching squid.

As for a license? This is the Philippines.

Remember here it is heavily fished by the locals, fishermen's villages everywhere.

A good sign or little else to do 200 Metres offshore, none of the locals we speak to catch a thing off the beach, too shallow, need a boat and go out to the reef. Aside try your luck but for us it's simply a relaxing time. Fresh fish can be purchased in the market or roadside from the guys that go out in the Banka boats daily weather permitting. In the rivers here is mostly fish farms and while not sure what sort of reception we would get throwing a line in for us not worth bursting the bubble.

Not sure if you are interested in Sea fishing or fresh water fishing but there are you tube videos online of people fishing in La Union. One was from Bacnotan and the guy caught a Trevally. The guy seems to wade in a bit and throw his line out.

Not sure if you want sea or fresh water fishing but I guess the people at the fishing tackle/bait shop will be good people to find out the best spots to fish and best methods and baits to use. You will also need to find out what you can and cannot take out to cook and eat later. Maybe you are only allowed to take certain species and of certain sizes.

The trip didn’t go as planned and didn’t get any spare time for fishing. Spent all the time in Baguio and just travelling down a few times as the house in Bacnotan was not complete.

Hope to be going back in February so hope to get time to try my luck then.

Still hopeful and I’ll let you know if I catch anything.

Thanks, I did find the local fishing shop, but was not was what I was expecting, it was very small and the other half of the shop was a convenience store.  But none the less a very helpful and friendly guy.

I have actually seen some of the Youtube videos and am pretty confident that there are some fish to be had in the sea around Bacnotan. Also the fishing shop has a FB page with people showing their catches.

Hopefully I will get more time on the next trip - Cheers for the info.
