Congrats, you can enter anytime, but don't wait till it expires, cause employer has every rights to cancel your pass if you don't join on agreed date. So, follow as per the agreed joining date.
Start date always appears on your EP card is your joining date (even though EP approves earlier, IPA letter issues), hence if you are a first time EP holder then you enter Singapore with IPA.

Please visit MoM website, you will find the first time applicant may get EP up to 2 years and renewal up to 3 years. So, a first timer may get 2 yrs or lesser depends on MoM approval and your employer's request. So, no unusual here.
