Married retired expat here living in Vietnam. I was told I could apply for Vietnam social health insurance. When I researched online it appears that I can but when my wife checked she was told it's not available. Has anyone here had experience with this? Thanks - @Yes006508

In my case it was possible to get a Social Health Insurance (SHI). I鈥檓 living in Da Nang, Dutch, mid 60鈥檚, married to a Vietnamese lady, 3-year TRC, have a VNeID and personal tax number. When my wife applied for her (voluntary) SHI a few months ago, they asked if I also needed one. So 3 weeks ago we went back to a local office for social security in Hoa Minh but they told me to go to bigger office at 25-27 Nguy峄卬 V膬n Hu峄�, Ho脿 Minh, Thanh Kh锚. They asked for copies of marriage papers, address registration and our passports/ID鈥檚. I had to pay VND 1.263.600 for a one year insurance. All done in less than 30 minutes. I had to download the VVssID-app (which also has an English language setting) and one week after the application, I got a mail with my personal account number and password to register for a digital account. Within 24 hours my information in the app was updated and I had a Health Insurance Card. Code GD448(+10 numbers) in which GD stands for Gia Dinh, 4 for Level 4 (80% coverage) and 48 as area code for Da Nang)

When applying they ask what your preferred hospital is, which will then be printed on your health insurance card. I chose Gia Dinh / Family Hospital because it also has an international section too. They told me Vinmec is not possible, but if you do some more research, it seems it is on the list of hospitals that accept people with SHI-cards (but under conditions).聽 Yesterday I went to the Gia Dinh Hospital (first floor) to check if I am indeed insured through the SHI and they confirmed. They also told me that foreigners are always brought to the international section of the hospital, the insurance pays (in general) 80% of the costs but based on the price of the Vietnamese section (which are lower than the prices in the international section).聽 I have no knowledge about how they do in 100% public hospitals.

Now considering if I still keep my current expensive international health insurance (max. VND 150 million a year for premium and deductibles) or rely on the Vietnamese SHI (as healthcare is still cheap) and take a separate travel insurance in case of going abroad
