Getting an ESL teaching job in Vietnam at 59 years of age

I am a 59 year old ESL teacher from the UK and now that I have reached 59, I can't get any offers from China anymore as the cut off is 60 there. So I was wondering whether it is possible to get an ESL job in Vietnam now. If so, would it be better to fly out to Vietnam and apply or just apply from my home country. I say this because I have actually applied for some jobs in Vietnam but have just had rejection letters. WHat's the age limit for teachers in Vietnam?

Hello Amadeus1. Welcome to the expat.com Vietnam forum.

There is currently a demand for qualified ESL teachers in VN. Recent legislation regarding qualification requirements can be found here. (Link)

There is no age limit set for foreign teachers.

Well I keep applying from my home country, the UK, and I keep getting rejection letters. I do have a job in Saudi but they sent me a tourist visa so I am reluctant to do it. I would much prefer to go to Asia but it's getting difficult to get offers at my age now it seems.

I read your posts on the other forum, and your reluctance to travel there on a tourist visa is justified. If the employer (agency?) is legit, they should arrange and pay for your work visa. My advice? Don't go there without your valid work visa.

I've not taught English in Vietnam, so I'm hoping other members with experience will chime in with their suggestions.

edit: your profile shows you as being in Saudi Arabia. If this is incorrect, please amend it to avoid confusion.

You shouldn't have any problems getting a job at 59 in Vietnam. I have met many teachers in their sixties here.

If you can handle the stress of teaching a class full of rowdy kids you will be alright.

I’d be looking at what your competition is ? What is your classroom teaching experience ?

TEFL is preferred in Vietnam, given that students will have little or no interaction in English outside the classroom, so they should learn English as a Foreign language rather than a second language, which of course is taught differently. Main requirement is of course a work permit, which comes with costs and commitment by your employer.

Hello, I cannot say your age is a problem, but how about your competences?  Do you have a teaching certificate such as CELTA, TEFL, TESOL, etc ?  Obviously you are a EN-native-speaker, but certificates for "teaching" and "pedagogy" are required.  Another good point to be competitive is to include another skills teaching Maths or Computing withing your resume.   Good luck man.
