It's not just the Vietnamese, my friend. I've seen Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Filipinas do the same thing. I've seen them bring LUGGAGE to a hotel pool so they can take pictures in different outfits and makeup. It's crazy, but Asians have had an obsession with photos for a LONG time!

There is a whole industry in Hawaii doing wedding pictures,聽 mostly at the beach, for Japanese.聽 The businesses provide wedding dresses and tuxedos as well as the photography.聽 A high proportion of these people are reportedly either already married or planning to be married after they return to Japan but want the pictures to be in Hawaii.

As far as the food photos, Vietnamese are not the only ones but they do seem to be the most obsessed with snapping even relatively ordinary meals for Facebook.聽 聽My wife doesn't even post anything on her Facebook account but she will take a meal photo and jokingly say "for Facebook."聽 She does sometimes text message them to friends.

Precisely.聽 Not just selfies and photos, but they also have professional glamour photos taken before they're married and portraits done when they're older.聽 (The prices for those photos are very low, almost every woman can afford them.)

Taking pictures in the same place day-in,day-out seems to be a strange concept to me. I have one friend who has around 1500 pics on her Zalo, most of the photos are headshots, nothing else.

She was fine, but a bit confusing as she didnt speak any English, but he sister did.

So no, it's not just an Asian thing. It's the social-media look-at-me phenomenon. Then again, someone mentioned the generational aspect and I must admit I never got into Myface (people under 40 probably don't get that pun).

When I travelled the world by motorcycle back in the '70s and '80s and wrote travel articles about my experiences, I relied on 35mm b/w and later slide film. I took care with the photos I took for cost reasons if nothing else, and that has carried over to my use of digital now.

Do you realise that an aussie was the person who started the selfie fad.

I recall as a child riding in the back of my parents station wagon and giving people in cars behind the V-sign - I thought is was something naughty.
