Did you have a chance to read the comments from local people at the bottom of the article? The legislation certainly seems to have popular support.

I was just commenting because there was recently a big story in the Hanoi press about phony listings on Airbnb in Ha Long City, with a big increase in foreigners showing up and not having their place to stay, or being redirected to some substandard place that would never be booked otherwise, except for the deception.

The authorities were taking a very serious look at the situation.

Without reading the story, I can say what's happened in the United States: The more Airbnb grows, the greater hit that lodging places such as hotels and motels take.

also, rarely do you find a homeowner in the USA who is happy that another homeowner in their neighborhood has turned a place into an Airbnb.

from that I figure the political pressure to do something has probably been quite serious.
