As I know,serviced apartment on Pham Ngu Lao, D1, 1 bedroom, fully furnished, just $600 maybe the landlady may ok with 2-3 months lease
Or Central Garden in D1 is ok too, 2 bedrooms just $700, take 3-4 mins to Ben Thanh market

I am japanese woman from Tokyo and have been here Vietnam over 4 years.

I am supporting for part time work for realestate agent, its not my main job.

Here in Ho Chi Minh, the client do not need to pay any agent fee, because the owner will cover the all fee.

You can find some apartment over 1 year contract. however, also you do not need to make the lease contract so long.
you could rent the apartment , room even under 6 months contract.

Last things, you could find nice aprtment in Dist 1, however, dist 3, dist 2, dist 4, depends on the location of your office. You could find some nice places in other erea too.

Maybe you can think about staying in a nice hotel.
Do some sums , it can work out cheaper?
But get a monthly rate from them,  And insist on it.
I have a Viet friend that is staying in a hotel in D2,, why ,, 3mill a MONTH!
But I dont think they will give us that rate!! haha
