What is the best restaurant in HCMC?

Hi All

I've been in Vietnam (mostly in HCMC) for coming on 7 years, but I still haven't found a reasonably priced restaurant that I can 'call my own'. Sure, I've found plenty of good ones, but none that I'd especially visit again.

Recommendations would be greatly received because I have family coming to visit from Australia in a few weeks.

Cheers

Peter

Hi Peter, here is a link to a website that I find helpful in my dinning out decision making -

Although this website is intended for on line ordering and delivery, I use it when choosing a dinning out destination. I like it because it has menu with prices and reviews.

Another site I consult is trip advisor.

Some of my regular favourites are - Taj Mahal , dong du street , District 1. Pizza Hut, Diamond Plaza D1,. Carl's Jr, Vincom plaza food. court. Black Cat, Phan Van Dat, Dist 1.
you can try the Hoa Tuc Restaurant 74/7 Hai Ba Trung St, D1.

excellent food, atmosphere and reasonably priced, they also run a cooking class that is a lot of fun.

What kind of cuisine you prefere?

If you want to show your family traditional Vietnamese cuisine, you can try Cuc Gach quan, 10 Dang tat, Tan Dinh ward, Dis. 1. It's very famous for truly Vietnamese foods. A must-go place for many travellers visiting Saigon also.
I agree sumo BBQ is a yummy fun place to take visitors... It's around 300vnd per person but all you can eat!
We stick to the little shops near our apartment but when we feel like something western Elbow Room is our favorite place!!!
They also own Skewers which is a bit more upscale (&pricey) but also very delicious!

Dear Peter,
Have I got the place for you?
My Vietnamese partner is a chef and when she was working in the Dong Khoi district at a French restaurant she worked along side a Vietnamese lady who today owns her own French Restaurant right on the edge of District 1 near the canal that leads to Binh Thanh District. Unfortunately I am back in Australia recovering from major surgery so cant give you the address so will ring Vietnam and get all the details for you and make another posting. The dearest item on the menu is Duck Confit at 80,000vnd less than AUD$4. Their Crepe Suzette at 40,000vnd is a steal. When in Saigon I eat there twice a week sometimes more.
..with extra ''msg''....eellll

Dear Peter,
Kim emailed me today the details of
NO NAME French Restaurant
57/27 Tran Khanh Du
District 1
Ph:08.866 545 999

Their website is only in Vietnamese but you can look at the pictures.
Two of my favourites are the Lamb Fillet in Green Pepper Sauce and the Tongue in warm Chilli Sauce. Portions are small as is normal for Vietnamese but so cheap you could order two dishes. On the other hand their salads are very filling. I am not big on French Fries so I always have mashed potato with every dish as its so hard to find in VN.
