Its not saying they are "things" it merely means they are other things such as,unhappy,sports loving,patriotic, etc Thats the way I read it being a native English speaker.I would agree with you if it actually was meant to mean that they were "things".

Thank you for pointing out what it really meant and sorry for my comment. It can be really confusing to understand the real sense of a sentence when you're not native english.
