I had an ultrasound to check my prostate and kidneys. Cost with JacksonCare health plan ($13 or so a month for that) was around $60.
Check out a post I made here on health insurance (you'll have to search) or health care where I gave some of the discounts you get with Jacksoncare and my opinion of it. I'll give you some info here though.

It's not a perfect plan but worth having. Specialists are not always available quickly (but quicker than CAJA /EBAIS National Health Insurance for legal residents and citizens).

Here's some info:
If you're over 59 you would pay 7,827 colones per month.聽 [if you're younger you get even better prices and better benefits] For this amount you would get:

-6 consultations per year with a general practitiioner of your choice within the clinic at an additional cost of about $17.35 per visit

-3 consultations with a specialist (they have a list of about 12 different specialties) at an additional cost of no more than 20 mil or $34.70 per visit

-2 x-rays at a cost of 5 mil or about $8.65 each

-up to 30 lab tests (basically blood tests etc) at a cost that varies but you would get a 60% discount off normal prices for these

There are a few other services you get at a discount as well

What I don't like about the plan is that:

a) they lied about some of the benefits when I signed up
b) specialists they "implied" are always available are NOT always available
c) making an聽 appointment is a cluster-F---, very awkward way of doing it, often involving 3 or 4+ phone calls, waiting for return calls, not getting them, and so on
d) often no choice of general practitioner. You get what you get (just like CAJA in that respect) and usually it will be the same 1 or 2.

What I do like and why I DO recommend it:

* SOME very good doctors/specialists聽
* low prices for lab tests and xrays and ultrasounds etc
* low prices on major procedures like removing kidney stones , and often the latest technology and discounts on minor procedures

Any anyone can get it, even non-legal residents, as far as I know. Pretty sure. You do have to have a bank account though, but now non-legals can get one at BCR (not sure about other banks)

So the way I see it, it's not perfect but is good Insurance to have should you need an expensive procedure that is covered by the plan.
