Let's talk Christmas / Navidad / Holidays / Celebrations / Parties

planner

My title is trying to be inclusive!聽 聽All celebrations and all parties are included!

This country however, is mostly Roman Catholic with a few other groups.

Christmas here is a big big deal. Everyone celebrates in the style they can!聽 聽It starts early and it continues well into January.

For those here a few years, we know that decorations start appearing in stores at the end of July. Now,聽 first of December and everything is clearing out, on sale and limited selection. Missing or needing something - go shopping now!聽 In a week there will be almost nothing left.

13th salary

Here legal employees聽 get a "13th" paycheck equal to 1/12 of their earnings.聽 聽That money starts to hit the streets December 5th and will continue until December 20th. 2 major impacts of this -聽 lots of people shopping!聽 (Yuck)聽 AND a lot of money on the streets, more drinking and partying and more opportunities for聽 crime!聽 Be safe.

Christmas main celebration here is Noche Bueno - Christmas eve!聽 That is when family, friends etc gather to聽 share a wonderful meal!聽 IF you are invited to a truly Dominican Dec 24th dinner, you will have an amazing time.

Generally this is when聽 gifts are of聽 clothing and shoes etc.聽 That is the cultural normal.聽 More and more outside influences mean some are more like Christmas many of us know.

December 25th is a day of relaxing and recovering from "last night".聽

New years eve is another聽 night of dinner with family and friends.聽 Then the partying starts and can go all night.

3 Kings Day

This is the day of toys and聽 gifts!聽 Culturally here this is when most of the gifts are exchanged in families.

Of course there are exceptions to everything. I am being general!聽

Add your experiences here in terms of the "Dominican Experience!".聽

Jennifer Storm Nelson

Is anyone there familiar with the Dominican tradition of making "jengibre", a ginger tea, and serving it at home gatherings during the month of December?聽 I was lucky to be able to attend one years ago, a nice cozy social time with hot spicy tea and snacks in the evening. I was living in Jarabacoa where the evenings actually got chilly in December so it was a nice treat. Here's a link to more info on it:
