Your costs are going to be based on lifestyle and location.

Kids?聽 Need schooling?聽 Will anyone work? Transportation to school and or work adds up.聽 Medical insurance? Any special needs, diets or hobbies?

This is what I spend per month in Bavaro, a little north of punta cana:

$800/month rent in a gated golf course/community

$350/month tuition for 6th grader

$110-180(July-October)/electricity <---- Electricity is literally going up 10 pesos per month since April, it might be more than $180 this year for the peak...

$120-180/month car gas(I have a LPG type)

$25/month insurance for car and motorcycle

$400/month food/groceries for me my wife and son <--- This is really getting more expensive as this inflation crisis continues

$500-1000/month restaurants, activities, other stuff <---- THIS IS WHERE IT DEPENDS GREATLY aka LIFESTYLE

It is great on my side I will try to reduced my electricity bills by being off grid I have my own generator and solar. But for the rest it is almost the same except I will not have school fees and no rent. I have to be more budget wise my retirement will be Canadian dollars 馃槈

So I estimate at 100000 pesos per month I should have a good lifestyle

My costs are about $850 month. I live off of a fraction of the posters budget, I鈥檓 far from living without any room for eating out and entertainment. I don鈥檛 go out often however, because I鈥檓 not that interested in partying or eating out at the more expensive places.. I live in Arroyo Hondo. Rent is approx. $400-600 depending on where I鈥檓 living. I鈥檝e been hoping around to check out different areas and cities. You can get a furnished 1BR for that price range in decent areas. I only rent with all utilities included. However, if I were staying in one spot for a year, it would be cheaper to rent with the expense of buying furnishings, that鈥檚 a personal call, as well as, how you spend your money and what other elements you may need to be included in your budget. I鈥檓 mostly working on my computer all day. I hope ,my input was helpful.

@nickmar First step is getting residency! Even if you are working for a foreign country, you can not legally perform work for income if you do not have a cedula.

Here's an article that has a good list of companies that allow work from anywhere. (Note: I know nothing about the jobs or companies beyond what is in this article, and frankly, I didn't even read the entire thing!)

Start searching everywhere for these jobs. Be aware of scams. Never pay to apply.

And the advice above applies.聽 To live and work her legally you need residency and you must qualify for it

Most of the job in telework are in information technology. You can work every where you want and the taxation will be base on your permanent country location at the end of fiscal year.聽 So if your employer allow you to work remotely in DR you can and you don't need residency has long your employer is not a domican Business

I pay 350/month as well for my little girl tuition and she's in pre school... i think it's 450 once she gets to 1st grade.

There is also more expensive yep.

I don't think it's that expensive to be honest for a good private school... I tought it would be more.

Schools costs will range depending on the quality of the education and how many can afford it.聽 My friend pays equivalent of 120 us month each for 8 and 10 year olds. And it's only half day school!聽 I know others who pay over US 1000 a month per.child for grade 8.

Beside tuition there are many other fees and extras

Rent is not too bad in Santiago. Depending what u want. Wife's relative pays 275 for an apt, 3 beds/2 bath on the 3rd floor with elevator, 2 parking spots, gate and secuirty in a decent part of town. We were looking at some houses. House was 317 000$ us and 4300 square feet. Currently renting for 800$. Older house but pretty elaborate and nice, in a good part of town. If u live like a gringo you shall pay a lot more. Shopping at Nacional and such places will cost you more. If u eat imported food it costs a lot more. Fruits and veggies are cheaper. Anything import is expensive.聽 Meat is also pretty expansive. In 3 weeks we probably spent 600$ on groceries,聽 but we ate like we were back home in US.

I agree.

Rent and life in Santiago is very good, even tough I live in Punta Cana for other reason i really enjoyed living there and it's still my favorite city to live in.

(lived in SD, stgo, Punta Cana)

Used to rent a big nice 3BDR for 800/month (would probably be 1000$~ right now) in Villa Olga.

Clean city, good option to eat out, not too much traffic and more importantly in my opinion the ppl living there are much nicer and less stressed then in SD.

@destination50聽 hi I鈥檓 here from New York n found a place for 600$ a month electric not included it was a shit place studio I left n now I鈥檓 scrambling around just to find a place under 600 a month impossible so far 750 is the normal plus eclectic so with tht ur up to almost a 1000 a month cell pnone food n travel w no car I have spent more here on extras then anywhere I鈥檓 still hoping I can find an apt somewhere w a pool clean studio one bedroom under 600 I鈥檓 retired on a fixed income need a pool or beach close by n definitely ac it鈥檚 hot as hell some places don鈥檛 even have ac I don鈥檛 know how they can live tht way but it鈥檚 not easy people telling me no worries u will find something for 400 - 600 a month I went looking yesterday yes 550 plus electric n nothing there was nice the pool was a bathtub n dirty no thanks

Depends on your landlord. My lease is in dollars and I pay in dollars. Some will allow you to convert to pesos and some not.

A lease can be in pesos, dollars, euros etc.

Whatever is negotiated and in a written lease contract will apply.

I always browse Indominincana/com聽聽Mercadolibre.com and Encuentra24.com聽 they have good listings of houses and apartments all over DR. They have all price range in there. Just in case someone needs the info!

I had alot of objection to paying with dominican pesos vs usd currency.聽 I have already signed 2 rental contracts and both want usd although they allow payment in pesos, the rent is stated in usd so that one month its more, sometimes abit less.聽 As you know, currency fluctuates.聽 Just be aware that in Punta Cana area, they typically want 3 months rent to sign a lease.聽 This is:

1. one payment for the first month rent

2. one payment for security deposit (returned sometime after you leave and they say its in the same condition)

3. one payment goes to the person who helped you find the apartment (usually a broker or real estate agent or someone),聽 this is their commission.

Usually this is a one year lease.聽 If you leave sooner, they keep the security deposit.

Hi there

Yes, I found rent is alot more than I expected as well.聽 I posted this before but having security where you live, is very important to me, so that they have rules, for example, they cant party and play music as loud as they want all night long and you cant sleep even with the best earplugs and windows shut.聽 Loud music all day and night is very possible in many places!聽 Another consideration is to get an apartment and share it with someone such as yourself.聽 Just an idea but obviously you want to be very careful.聽 You can post an advertisement in the classified section.
