Santo聽 Domingo聽 is a HUGE city聽 and聽 it聽 is important to first identify聽 where you want to live and why.聽 Things you want to consider:

Stability of聽 electric聽 supply
Stability of water supply
Are there phone and internet聽 lines available in the area
Do you need access to public transportation
Do you need聽 聽good schools and shopping close by
Is the area聽 safe for your lifestyle

Once you establish what is important then start to narrow down聽 areas (urbanizations) and聽 specific areas withing聽 that. Sometimes you will find a聽 4 block聽 area that is聽 just perfect.

Once you establish this then start聽 walking or driving down the streets, if you speak spanish, ask!聽 People are friendly and will help you. Enlist the聽 help of a local. Look for signs.Here they really聽 don't advertise too much and an agent will want a full month of rent for their help.

Normal terms are 2month deposit and 1month for the agent.聽 then you pay rent in arrears not in advance. This can depend on the landlord and contract. A contract is NORMAL.聽 But it does not cost more then 2,000 RD for a contract. Do not pay more then this.

Sometimes you will need a local willing to sign for you!聽 I can understand this as聽 it is not uncommon for聽 expats to up and skip town.

Prices will vary聽 聽widely.聽 It can go from 3,500 RD聽 a month for聽 a room and shared bathroom to聽 5,000 AMERICAN聽 dollars for a penthouse聽 suite or聽 beautiful waterfront home.聽 Here is where a knowledgable聽 local comes in, they can guide you on聽 pricing.

I live in the colonial zone and I pay a premium to live right near work,聽 able to walk to聽 supermarkets,hardware stores and all the restaurants and聽 clubs I want.

I聽 would spend the聽 time to聽 get to聽 know an聽 area聽 before signing a聽 lease!聽 Ask lots and lots of聽 questions and do聽 not take聽 what you are told at face value!聽 Confirm!
