L card to F+ card directly?

LIZAMATT

Hi all,

I am an Indian citizen holding an L ( previously D) card valid till 2025 .I have been in belgium since 2014 and been working on a local contract since 2018. I got married to my belgian BF in September 2022. With all the different legalities i am a little confused and would appreciate your help:

1.I am now wondering if there is an advantage of applying for F / F+ now or do I wait for for current card to expire. ( what happens if I loose my job ?)

2. Also considering my current card do I directly get a F + card

3.Does a F card holder need any special procedure for work permit .

P.S I am not thinking of applying for citizenship yet but would just like to stay on in Belgium with my husband if I loose my job

Any advice is welcome.

L=permanent resident= Same rights as Belgians in regards to job market, benefits etc.

I see no value added to switch to F or F+ card to be honest as there is no added value.

L card is not conditional meaning that when it expires there are no requirement such as having a job to renew except of course a picture and finger prints.

please keep your L card there is not advantage changing to F or F+ card. Just wait and apply for citizenship at the right time.

@woodcook

The OP is not interested in citizenship. This is mainly due to some countries like India do not recognize the dual citizenship. But that is a topic for another threat maybe

@Edigj thank you for the quick response..thats reassuring to hear.

@woodcook thanks for the response..helps clear a little of my confusion

@Edigj do I understand correctly with the L card if I loose my job I will not be asked to leave the country within 3 months . And I will get the unemployment benefit till I find a new job?
