White foam under a bush and tree on the ground in our village garden

Any idea what it is?

Or seriously - does it smell of anything? Could be an overflowing "septic tank", or someone's dumped some chemicals, or....

Not the over flow from anything as it's almost by the front fence of the house and as far as I'm aware it doesn't smell but is tucked away almost out of sight or it would have been if husband hadn't strimmed there a few weeks ago

White Flux or Alcoholic flux, is a stress-related disease that affects sweet gum, oak, elm and willow trees. The disease is caused by a microorganism that ferments the sap that seeps or bleeds from cracks and wounds in the bark. The result is a white, frothy ooze that has a fermenting odor similar to beer.

Maybe?

Note - I nicked that from a google search so it might very well be utter balderdash

I had a mental picture of something Biblical - a bit of cuckoo spit would be a real let-down! 馃榿

LOL! My first thought was cuckoo spit, too.

If it's like this, it's harmless:

It's usually seen in the branches of shrubs, but the grubs can be found on weeds, grass, fallen leaves, too.
