I understand it's nice to have contact with people from your own country, but to make your life more pleasurable, reach out to others as well.


In 16 years of living in Austria, in my circle of friends, they are from all over the world: Britain, Spain, Germany, Austria, Canada, Cuba, Switzerland, Ukraine, India, Syria, Afghanistan, USA. and Hungary. I'm sure I've missed a few out.


But what is most important is having friends from the country that you are living in.


I've seen polls where Expats have complained that they don't feel welcomed in their new country. It turns out that they never socialised with anyone other than those from their home country or occasionally the odd work co-worker. Which is quite sad, really.


If you don't speak German fluently, don't let that hinder you. I've always found that as long as you make the effort in trying to speak German, that's OK, you are trying, and they will also often help you pronounce words correctly.
