Considering Malta for retirement

Hi we are considering either retiring to Malta in the future or spending a large part of the year there. We intend doing several trips in the meantime to make sure it鈥檚 what we want.

we鈥檝e shut our business so not thinking of working there so jobs aren鈥檛 an issue, though we would be happy to volunteer. We have grown up kids and frail parents and an elderly dog so won鈥檛 be moving just yet.

I鈥檓 interested really in the best visa for when the time comes, is language learning compulsory (I think I鈥檇 struggle with that now!!, and how good a place it is for older citizens. Are they looked after well or considered a burden? Are aged healthcare and elderly care resources good? Obviously we would pay for ourselves and not expect anything for free but want to know if it is generally a good provision?

Also, where to base ourselves. Where are the largest expat communities? Where to avoid?

Welcome to the forum. As a retiree myself I recommend retirement in Malta. The health service is good and public transport is free for people who have residence. For English speaking people there are no language barriers.Most of the locals speak English and for the foreign聽 workers it is a requirement to speak English. Malta is tourist friendly and business friendly. However, since Brexit certain restriction apply to British people. Therefore I recommend come to Malta, get acquainted with the place and decide for yourself if you like to stay here permanently. I live in Gozo and a lot of British expats live all over the island. As you are a third country national now because of Brexit you can only stay for maximum of ninety days out of one hundred and eighty if you decided not to move totally to here.
