Deciding to relocate to Malta instead of Spain

Hi Everyone, looks like a great forum :)

My wife and I have probably decided to relocate from the UK with our daughter to Malta - we were going to go to Spain but now think Malta is a better option for us.

I would be keen to know what schools you would recommend for a 4 year old girl (international school is also ok)and what area.

Any one know of good speech therapists there?

Is broadband speed good there?

How are crime rates?

We have a business in the UK which I can run from anywhere so was going to go to Spain but thought Malta may be a good option :)

Planning to rent for a while before deciding to buy or continue renting.

Thanks
Steve

Sorry cant vouch for schools bit am sure someone will be able to

broadband speeds here are very good and would certainly recommend Melita for their service very good solid reliable and fast and you get the speed you pay for.

Yes we have crime here but its a very very low rate - Malta is probably one of the safest countries to live in.

Renting is a very good idea first (for at least a year id say) as that gives you time and flexibility to make your decisions.

Buying at the moment is not a brilliant idea as the prices here are still far too high and re-sales are not quick...
Thanks toonarmy, I thought broadband would be good because of the commerce in Malta, I will check out Melita, glad to hear crime is low :)

Plan to rent for at least 2-3 years
renting is a great option and quite cheap here depending on what you need.....

Thanks, any links to good rental sites :)
the sites are usually out of date - as they just leave all properties on the sites even when they've been rented out for years....ours for example is still advertised even now and we been in it for three years.
I would suggest looking at the private ads in 聭The Times Of Malta聮 to compare the prices.
Happy hunting!
Thanks but I am in the UK at present :(
I wouldn't try using dhalia as we tried and they never got back to us. even got our friends in Malta to ring them and they never rang back.
Hi Steve,

you can access the Times online.

Welcome to the Forum.

I hope you have jobs set up in Malta as we have plenty of sun ( and wind today) but no jobs. Don't be fooled by the low rents ....salaries are much lower than you might imagine unless you have the best qualifications (IT,finance or languages).

Regards
Ricky
Hi Ricky

Thanks very much :)

We have a business in the UK and I can work from anywhere so will be doing that.

Hi Steve,

that's the best Malta option! -))

If you are near Sliema/St.Julians join in to our Expat meetings every Wednesday. We look forward to meeting you.

Cheers
Ricky
Thanks Ricky :)
Yes Times of Malta can be viewed online.
Which area are you looking to rent, how big etc.   My partner is Maltese and advises not to go to an agent as they take a commission and therefore the rent will be higher than a private rental agreement.
We have moved in to a new apartment in Gzira, furnished with all electrical goods. It聮s immaculate. And just one minute from the sea front and promenade, great location.  We can ask our landlord if he has any others or even other contacts if you want and send you the details.
That would be great Lesleyc :)
word of mouth and recommendation is always the best way....and you can take that all the way to the bank.....forget about agents if you can.....
Thanks for the advice, what areas should I avoid due to flood risks?
Avoid Birkakara area and Qormi as they really do flood quite badly.聽 Prices from Sliema upwards on the Island are more expensive, realistically for anything, St Julians has its own prices as even Cigarettes are more there... Tourist trap and all that.

totally agree that times of malta website and maltapark for rentals as they are private rents.

Good luck with the hunt

Julian
