Taking a Dog to Malta

Me and my partner are moving to Malta in December. We are taking our Dog which is a staffie but has no papers. I have read that pitbulls are a banned breed in Malta, but staffies can be confused with pitbulls quite often.

I was just wondering with no papers, would cause a problem?

you will need to see a vet and get a pet passport
i suggest you read this documentation

also to mention i know a number of people who have staffies in malta

The dog will have to be micro chipped and have a valid pet passport.

It then will depend on your mode of travel.

If by car then聽 you will need to pre notify Malta by filling in and returning the online form, you will need to know the date and ferry time of your arrival into Malta.
The vet will meet you and inspect and check聽 the dog and passport.

If flying in its easier to get one of the firms that specialise in transporting dogs as they will provide a cage and paperwork聽 required.

Hi thanks for the reply. Everything is in hand in regards to his passport and rabies shots. It was more what if they ask us to prove he is a staffordshire bull terrier and not a pitbull. I have just read though that it is only American pitbulls that are a banned breed which is much bigger than a staffie. So I am hoping we will be fine.

Great, don't forget to (if arriving by car) factor in the worming for your dog.
It must be done 1 - 5 days before your arrival in Malta.

Hi we are also looking to drive to Malta and I've got my pets passport sorted and his vaccinations etc but do I need to do anything additional for passing through France and Italy or will the passport be sufficient?

Once you leave the UK there are no more checks until you arrive in Malta. Don't forget to pre advise Malta vet regarding arrival, plus聽 the worming requirements ( 1 - 5 days before arriving in Malta).
