I was warned by a norwegian friend..that it is not a great move.

I am beginning to have second thoughts..

My son is grown up and he will leave for college soon in India, He is not at all interested in moving to norway.

So, i am here only for professional growth..

to which city are you planning to move in Norway? And why Norway, since medical research is not very big here? I would rather try the US or the UK, if I wanted to do research...

I don't want to sound negative, but your qualifications as a preschool teacher are not being recognized in Norway. You best chance would be a direkt application to English speaking Preschools (International schools). Stavanger has a few. Maybe your sister can help if she lives there.

Google is always your friend when it comes to getting information about relevant schools /addresses in Norway.聽 I don't know any of the schools myself. You might also find information in the school section of this forum.

@no_clue... the work i do has been been done here as a pilot.. and i would like to take it forward...using the populations we have in India and the genuine research done in one centre that has lots of meaning....US or UK have research which gets patented and then it gets difficult for low resource nations to get the access... i am keen to聽 translate this work validating in my country and develop cheap test which is cheap because it will not be patented, will still聽 make聽 some money, not lot聽 and save millions of lives, because it will be cheap and better than FDA approved stuff which is patented...

Polio got eradicated because Salk was not greedy to patent the vaccine...

sadly , i find negative remarks from natives ( other than researchers)聽 who underestimate both indian and norwegian scientists and research and especially they have this thing about inferiority of Indians...i dont contest that, but i have a huge vision of making this test see the light of the day and whatever i can do to get it done.. ..you will be glad to know that norway features amongst best medical researches...

and you know india has huge population, huge market and huge burden of this particular cancer which affects indian women maximum...and almost 100,000 die for lack of prevention for 20 years before they got cancer in first place, all tests are FDA approved and very very expensive...

so...that is the only only reason i see collaboration as one great way because what i hear of Norge is that it is genuine , sincere and humanity driven...and they have worked on what i wanted to ....in a small population

I'm not sure if I fully understand your research goals ( cheap testing methods for cancer?) but if Norway gives you the money to do it, why not. But be warned, Nowegian Universities also patent their results - they have whole departments devoted to evaluate patentable research. Better clarify these details before you start. In addition, Norway a very expensive research location and you get less research done for your money than in other places.
Not sure if I agree with the statement that Norway is humanity driven.... Definitely not more than other EU nations. Money for research is hard to get here, too. Norway has certainly some good researchers and labs, but offers in my opinion less funding and research opportunities than e.g the UK. In general terms is Norway' s contribution in medical research rather insignificant (except this years Nobel prize in Physiology- the first for Norway).

for the public school system, you need to speak fluenty Norwegian, pass their language test and get your qualifications recognized ( which they might or might not.). I recommend to contact NOKUT. no for more information.
In the private school sector (International schools, British schools, etc., very few in Norway), the schools themselves decide on the requirements. So you might get away without the Norwegian language test and the process of getting your degree recognized. Hence my recommendation to contact them directly. Hope that helps...

let聽 me rephrase..all tests can be cheap provided we control patent聽 this is not charity, this is win win... co patenting because of joint research and then market across LLMIC....

anyways.... question is_ is norway a worthwhile place to move or is it as bad as rest of the globe....... are people intolerant to outsiders....as i felt while i was interacting with some one a while back...

i dont want to make all that effort to learn a strange language just to land up in unsocial environment...i might as well get maltreated back home

Moving to US and UK is big no no...i would rather work in rural india if that is the case with Norway...

if Norway is 'worthwhile' place depends on yourself and your expectations. Every country has it's share of intolerant and unsocial people, some discriminate more openly, others in a hidden way.聽 You have to visit Norway and find out for yourself how you feel treated.聽 Everybody has a different experience....

Hi everyone!

I am Swastik. Living in Norway for last 4 years! Studied, learnt norwegian and finally got a full-time job here in a small town in Vestlandet. Its probably the best country to live and work, but at the same time one of 'coldest' counties in the world. By 'coldest', I don't only mean the weather but also the social coldness to be integrated in the norwegian society and the openness of norwegians. I don't think they are intentionally cold, but I think they respect(be considerable) others freedom and private life that they don't want to bother or disturb others life. So, either one should be very strong and independent to sustain here OR one should find a proper social environment (in school or workplace) . To live a young and lonely life is a challenge for every foreigner here. But in a positive side, I think in this process(of living such life here), man kan learn many important lessons in his life. Without a doubt everybody living in Norway has to go though the similar harse conditions, but how different kan one react and gets adopted is upto him. So, I think to live in Norway can be a good human experience for everyone.

I think in this context, expat-blog is a good platform to share different experiences that kan help to be accostomized with Norwegian life.

I have been living in Bergen for 5 years now and know how you feel. Small town life is probably even tougher...
From my experience, the best way to connect with people in Norway is via sports. Maybe try to join a local sports club? I have the impression that they appreciate the effort (but maybe I'm wrong...). Norwegians are very focused on their families and their known circle of friends. They don't have the deep ingrained curiosity you find in other cultures.
My way of dealing with the emotional introvert nature is to travel abroad frequently and refill my batteries regarding聽 sunshine and social contacts there.聽 Many of my expats friends only socialise in expat circles, unless they are married to a Norwegian (which gives them a 'entry ticket' to Norwegian circles). This might sound a little harsch, but I'm looking forward to leave this country. There are just too many grey and yet darker grey days for me here in Vestlandet. The summers are beautiful, but just to short and I can never get used to the emotional coldness. If you studied here, you are probably familiar with the Jantes Loven. It is in my opinion a must-read if you want to understand the Norwegian society.

I'm planning to move to norway in 2016 to pursue my postgraduation. I found out that there is no tuition fee in a few educational institutes & student visa is easy to comeby as long as I manage to show that i have sufficient money to fund my stay there. provided i do get accepted by the university( I plan to apply at the Molde University), do you think its worth it. I'm planning on doing a 2 years course & after that, possibly work in norway or the neighboring countries. Would love to get some feedback on this.
