Hi, I am coming to Portugal on a D8 visa and would like to bring my new vehicle with me but have only owned it 2 months does that mean am not going to be tax exempt if I want to legalise the vehicle as I have not owned it for 6 months ? anyone else come across this issue ?

thanks

I think you are correct in that issue.

My understanding is that you are allowed to import it tax free if you have owned it for a year and if you import it within 6 months of becoming resident.

If you can put off any application for another 4 months then, once the vehicle has been owned by you for 12 months, you can import it with little/no tax exposure.

This is all part of getting yourself informed prior to making any moves.

Oh, I made the same mistake!

@slugsurmamates thanks for clarifying that and responding, I think am either going to have to get my stuff sent via courier or see if I can get a top box for the roof and bike carrier, or purchase a cheap van to get me over there and then leave, thanks for the reply though much appreciated.

Hi Tim

Maybe this will help you:

Request the exemption from the vehicle tax when moving to Portugal

@JohnnyPT thanks for that information am still trying to decide if its worth bringing a car over and going through the process or not at the moment.
