New process for Portugal residence permit extension

GuestPoster2278

Hi everyone,

I  am wondering if anyone can share their recent (2024) experience in extending a residence permit after the initial 2 year period. As I understand after the re-organisation of the immigration service in Portugal in H2 2023 they introduced changes to this process. The new website provides limited information, something like  "you can apply 90-30 days prior to the expiration date". I would appreciate if someone can help to understand the following:

  • Does the new process require face to face visit to the immigration office or everything is processed on-line?
  • If I apply for permit extension 90 days prior to the expiration date of the current one (initial 2 year permit) how quickly the interview appointment is arranged (if the interview is required at al)?
  • If I apply 90 days prior to the expiration date of the existing permit, is it realistic to get a new permit prior to the expiration date of the current one?

Thanks in advance

@Dimitri,

The information I know is this:

By virtue of the implementation of Decree-Law No. 109/2023, there is an automatic extension for Residence Permits and National Visas applicable to Residence Permits and Visas set to expire on or after November 10, 2023, and extends the validity until June 30, 2024.
