Why do you need an accountant for the NHR? Do you already have this regime or not yet?

If so, this only has an impact on the annual tax return, from April to June each year. You don't need an accountant, although he can help you with your first tax return, but for the following years, the way you fill it in and the annexes to submit are always the same.

If not, there are now new rules, only for highly qualified workers (with a flat rate of 20% on income from employment, dependent or self-employed). This legislation is not yet in force. But when it is, you can apply for this status by yourself:

I was informed I need an accountant to help me pay tax here in Portugal, I have followed the steps from the forum before and have the Residente Não Habitual-Pedido de Inscrição form till 2033 is that what I require ?

So am I correct I just need an accountant to help me submit the first tax return or am I too late now ? sorry if the question sounds stupid and thanks for your help Jonny, or are there any links on here to help fill the Tax return form in ?

It's not difficult to fill in the IRS tax return, but it's best to have an accountant help you the first time. As a NHR you have to fill in Annex L. The tax office website will help you with alerts and error messages. You can find some support here:

The deadline for submission is between 1 April and 30 June. You'll probably have to pay a fine...

While on the surface it seems easy peasy, but I have to respectfully disagree that it is not always that simple… everybody’s tax situation is different, depending on their nationality, business/income dealings in Portugal, business/incomes in other countries, whether they are truly tax residents in Portugal, whether their home country has a tax treaty with Portugal, what their source(s) of income is/are—both type and from which country(s), and so on.

Further, whether or  not one should file for NHR - either the 1.0 or 2.0 versions - is extremely dependent on where income comes from and what type of income it is. For example, we sat with our US accountant and with our Portuguese accountant and in our specific case filing for NHR (either version) would have actually cost us significantly more than not filing for NHR, so we chose not to do it.

The rules are extremely intricate and so i highly suggest that anyone that has residency in Portugal speak with a qualified tax accountant that also has experience with their home country to determine if in fact their situation is simple enough that they can handle it themselves or if they need some assistance. most local certified Portuguese tax accountants are really quite inexpensive vs. non-local accountants—especially those provided through expat visa firms (which many times are extremely expensive and focus on customer churn, not tax optimization for your specific situation).

After having a less than stellar experience with one accountant in the Algarve, we have now found an excellent accountant in the Algarve that speaks fluent English, is a certified and highly experienced tax accountant, and has experience with American expats. However, the moderator tules here do not let me post their information here, so if you would like his contact info, please DM me. I am not sure if he is accepting new clients, as we have found that good, reputable accountants tend to fill ip quickly, but it's worth a try.

And no, I am not an accountant, nor do I get anything for the recommendation, other than the satisfaction of helping someone. I know the frustration of trying to figure everything out when starting from zero. A lot of people helped us, and I’m just paying it forward.

Update: I know in my previous post, I mentioned that you could DM me for my accountant’s contact info… I have received a quite number of DM requests recently (nice to meet you all!).
