What do you think about work relocation packages to Portugal

matjung

When I look out the window in Ireland and everything feels grey and bleak,

I sometimes drift into searching for jobs in Mediterranean countries.

I鈥檝e noticed that some Portuguese job agencies are targeting 鈥渏unior expats鈥 and offering relocation packages.

What鈥檚 your take on these kinds of offers?

And did you move to Portugal because of something similar, or do you know anyone who has?

Those ads you see for "junior expats" in Portugal are, for the most part, for BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) companies鈥攅ssentially, large contact centre hubs (call centres).

Many young people use these offers with everything paid for, stay for 6 months or a year to get to know the country and culture, and then look for something better in their actual field of study once they have their documents and are settled.

The pay is modest. Usually, around 鈧1,100 to 鈧1,700 gross (plus a food allowance). If accommodation isn't included, this amount is very tight for living comfortably in Lisbon. The call centre environment can be very rigid, with tight performance metrics and repetitive tasks.

鈧1,100 to 鈧1,700 wow that would be very tight, no partying then :D

Many of these agencies offer a room in a shared apartment with other colleagues. In a rental market as tough as Lisbon or Porto, this is a huge benefit. People will be working and living with others in the exact same situation, which makes building an immediate social circle very easy, with people from a wide range of countries. They make many parties and social events, so this won't be a problem...

While I have never tried one of these packages, I assume they are like all of these packages offered worldwide. They are based upon a hype around a destination and the desire of mostly young people to get there. The other side has the desire to recruit as cheap HR as possible.

Other than Portugal, the destinations Australia and New Zealand come to mind for these packages.

I am not critical about any of this. One should just be aware.

I'm Portuguese, borne and raised in Lisbon, and I can say that arranging accommodation here, at this time, for 1100鈧 is becoming next to impossible.

From Covid to date, Lisbon is being recognized as the European city that suffered the biggest rent price boom, and that affected the country as a whole. Nowadays 1100鈧 buys you rent for a one single room apartment if you make some extended search and are willing to stay off the most interesting areas on the city.

Yes, I know that. The problem is that prices are based on supply and demand. And not everyone can live in the most interesting areas of the city... that's how it is in Lisbon and in every city in the world...

eg. Not all Londoners can live in Mayfair, Belgravia, Knightsbridge or overlooking Hyde Park or St James Park ... very interesting areas indeed...

The above doesn't really matter for the topic. Rent is very high in many places around the globe. Relocation packages should (and often do) consider this. Is it financially with taking up one of these packages? I guess it depends on the purpose. I think it is good for younger people who have some career time to waste and who want to see the world.

The fact is, London is pretty much the most expensive capital in Europe.
