Language Proficiency for Portugal Temporary Residence

Hi,

My wife and I obtained our D8 Visa's and have our temporary residency appointment in a few months.聽 Is proficiency in Portuguese a requirement for a temporary residence permit?

Thank you,

Dan and Lisa

Hi

No, proficiency in the Portuguese language is not a requirement to obtain a temporary residence permit.

Knowledge of the language only becomes a legal requirement after 5 years of temporary residence, should you decide to take the next step. The required level is A2 (elementary/basic) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

This level is mandatory for anyone wishing to apply for:

  1. Permanent Residence Permit
  2. Portuguese Citizenship / Nationality

Note: If, after 5 years, you choose not to demonstrate the A2 level, you can simply continue to renew your temporary residence permit indefinitely, as long as you continue to meet the D8 visa requirements.
