You can get a NIF online using a company like anchorless. They were excellent. I got my NIF in about a week. You need the NIF to open a Portuguese bank account. That took about 3 weeks. Note that anchorless emails you the pages you must sign and you have to mail those signed originals back to Portugal so they can complete the account opening. You are supposed to print out the pages emailed to you on A4 size paper.

Hi all, noticed this thread pop up again, in reference to one of OP's questions we don't see answered yet, in our experience yes a NIF is required for a long term (e.g. annual rental).

We need to enter our tenants NIFs for example when we rent our apartments in the Alentejo. Only then can we register it with the government and pay the taxes (and provide the proofs needed for visas such as the D7 with international tenants). Hope this helps! - Elizabeth

Hi Folks

You need to apply for a NIF number before you can rent or buy property in Portugal.  If you go to google and write icanhelp pt, they help with issuing NIF numbers

You can do everything yourself, free of charge. Why spend money? If you need support, hire a solicitor. But at the tax office (to request a NIF number), they understand English, at least the basics.... so what's the need to use these paid services? And besides, you're an EU citizen...

As they ^^^^ say you can do things yourself by being here on some short holiday, NIF is first then Bank Account both of which can be on non-Portugal address.

It is being hard to find an apartment in Lisbon. Any idea if it is possible to register for a long-term residency with an adress of airbnb room or is it required to have an official rental contract? Any experiences on that topic. I am afraid not finding anything before the 3 month of stay limit without residency finishes.

You're an EU citizen. All you need is an address where you can receive your mail.You can then change your address when you find somewhere else. If you were a non-EU citizen, it would be different because of the visa requirements. But in your case, that doesn't apply.

Why not try Almada (Lisbon's south bank) or another location near the Fertagus train? There's a 40 euro/month pass for all transport, and the south bank is cheaper and there may be more possibilities.
