Seek work in Lisbon District in Primary Healthcare - GP

Hi I'm Liam Moore,

A General Practitioner, currently living and practicing in Ireland and looking to relocate to the Lisbon region of Potugal to live with my son who is employed and resident in this area.

Presently, I'm looking for potential employment opportunities.

Seeking part-time employment on permanent contract.

Preferred location: Greater Lisbon District.

More information about my career to date:

* Irish Graduate with American Post Graduate qualifications.

* Extensive clinical experience in Primary Healthcare delivery over 50 years in USA, Canada and Ireland.

* Registered with Irish Medical Council and Irish College of General Practice. English speaking only.

* Currently in active practice in Ireland since 1982:
The Phoenix Medical Clinic, Millennium Park, Naas, County Kildare.

* Interested in working 3-4 sessions per week (12-14 hours total) in general healthcare provision, elective minor surgical procedures and clinical tutorial status if available.

* Is fully Covid 19 Moderna vaccinated.

* Special interest and skills in Rheumatology, Joint injections, Geriatrics, Dermatology, Minor Surgery and Undergraduate Training.

Would greatly appreciate any direction, advice or information on how I should proceed.

I would suggest you register with the portuguese medical council first. If your medical degree was from a university accepted by Portuguese medical council then you should be fine. Sometimes there is a reciprocal arrangement so if you were practising in Ireland then the Irish medical council can give you a performance of good standing certificate or similar. You may need to look into language proficiency as well if you would like to work in Portugal. I have looked into it as a dentist from the U.K.
I don鈥檛 expect any visa requirements as you are already in the EU.
Should be straightforward for you to practice with one of the private medical groups.

2. EU Citizens:

RIGHT OF RESIDENCE IN PORTUGAL
EU citizens are entitled to live in Portugal for a period of up to 3 months without any conditions or formalities other than holding a valid identity card or passport.

RESIDENCE FOR MORE THAN 3 MONTHS
EU citizens must apply for the registration certificate to be able to live in Portugal for more than three months. This certificate must be applied for at their local Council within the 30 days following their first three months in national territory. The cost is EUR 15.

Dear Liam

I had to stop working at the end of March this year due to musculoskeletal problems.
I think if I wanted to practice in Portugal it would have been difficult due to the language proficiency.
I do think that registration would not have been a problem though.

I had a relatively good run of over 31 years and pretty much accomplished all my goals in the profession.
My wife and I will be leaving the U.K. middle of May. She is an audiologist and she will hopefully explore options for locum positions.

As long as we retain a sense of Wonder & Awe
there is a Mission to accomplish & are goals to be聽 realized.

After 50 years in full time practice I have had time to explore
other issues in my part-time commitment to clinical work &
teaching undergrads.

Will take that as a complement but unable to confirm
Somethings are not quite what they may seem.
Read "Elemanon" & "Anam" (as previously referred to)聽 backwards - i.e.from right to left.
Our perception of reality is as elusive as Schrodinger's Cat, Enganglement! & Consciousness!!!!!

I use this analogy to illustrate how our perception of an explicit reality is but a mirror image
of an implicit reality- Mind-Brain transmutation generates that reflected mirror imagery.
The brain functions like a Hubble telescope gazing back through time & space -towards infinity.
Ponder as you sleep & dream.

Yes,
The explicit & implicit are Inverse Correlates.
The term "light", ( as photons without mass or charge & seemingly infinite) is the
explicit correlate of the implcit term "Light" as applied within a metaphysical context.
Consequently, I propose that the fundamental essense/ nature of the physical World
is "light" as in the "Light of the World"

Must be a fatigue factor!

But I just wanted to put the Right (hemispheric lobe) Spin on that
statement about correlates!
Like that famous Cat, at the end of this explicit life on earth
we are both dead & alive- yet alive & living in an implicit domain.
Death & Resurrestion can be a very elevating thought.

Hi Liam,
You will have to learn Portuguese and learn it pretty quickly to get work here as a doctor and to re accepted by the Portuguese. As you are heading to Lisboa most people there speak English but work wise you will definetly need Portuguese. They are more forgiving in cities like Lisboa and Porto but where I live in northern Portugal I have experienced racism against people who do not speak Portuguese. Trust me as a fellow Irishman, in rural parts the Portuguese do not like outsiders and are never accepted. My Portuguese is rubbish which makes the situation worse. Every week I find some form of racism against me. I have found a handful of really nice welcoming, pleasant locals who have been great but the majority do not want me here.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. Your post was an eye opener. I haven鈥檛 travelled throughout Portugal but was under the impression that foreigners or English speakers are accepted everywhere in Portugal - as long as we鈥檙e not too loud, rowdy or binge drinkers.

I would like to mention that there are many expats in small villages on the portuguese countryside. Almost of them are very welcomed and accepted. But as in everything, there are exceptions, especially in small communities, in small rural areas, with older and less educated people, where if you don't speak the local language, dialogue and understanding becomes difficult.

We will find polite and friendly people everywhere, really nice welcoming, pleasant locals, with whom we feel good and identify ourselves. From some of the others outside this group, we only want to keep distance.

I don't know if there are any solutions/approaches for this problem. The only answer I can find is within each one of us. This can only be done if one first ask himself: can I let go of my judgements if, first, I could put myself in someone else's shoes?
