I bought my used (2 year old) car from a car dealership with a warranty, which made the decision quite easy. Generally I think that the state inspection service (Controlauto) is doing a pretty good job inspecting cars (mine is inspected annually now). So unless the car had an accident since the last inspection, the basic mechanical safety features should be fine.
