Brazilian nationality for a Portuguese citizen

sparrowbr

I’ve seen some generic information about citizens of Portuguese speaking countries being able to get Brazilian nationality after one year of residency.

Can anyone share any information about how this works in practice/in more detail, for citizens of Portugal? Can we just arrive, or do we need a visa? What is needed to then apply for Brazilian nationality?

Obrigado!

Welcome, @sparrowbr.  Equality of Rights and Responsibilities of Portuguese citizens living in Brazil and of Brazilian Citizens living in Portugal is governed by the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Consultation signed by the two countries on April 22, 2000.

In general, Brazilian citizens who have lived as legal permanent residents of Portugal for at least three years, and Portuguese citizens who have lived as legal permanent residents of Brazil for at least three years, can apply for equal rights with the citizens of their country of residence without losing their original nationality. To be considered legal permanent residents, they would have entered the country of residence under an immigrant visa, not a tourist visa.

The Brazilian regulations for this appear here:

The actual treaty appears here:

This only applies to Portuguese citizens, not to citizens of all Portuguese-speaking countries. Citizens of all Portuguese-speaking countries are, however, exempt from having to pass the CelpeBras examination to prove Portuguese Language proficiency as part of the naturalization process.
