New here and thought I would say hello.聽 Looking forward to connecting.聽 I am a US citizen, engaged to my Brazilian fiancee who lives in Parnaiba PI.聽 We are getting married later this year and I am relocating to Brazil permanently in early 2025.聽 I appreciate all the information I've read so far on the forums!

Hello, my name is Chris and I am a retired American living on the island of Itamaraca, in the state of Penambuco Brazil!聽 Just discovered this site and looking to meet some other expats in Brazil.聽 I鈥檝e been to most of the northeast states and would love to learn more about peoples experiences in other parts of Brazil.

Ive been on this site for a couple of years now and there is a lot of good info here.

My wife (Brazilian) and I moved to Campos Do Jordao with our dog and cats a this past August and I find there are few people that speak English here, but they generally seem eager to help me despite my rudimentary and fractured Portuguese! If anyone has any questions about this area, I'm happy to help.

On another note, if there are any other LGBTQ folks on this site, I'd love a PM to hear your story. Have a great day everyone and Go Packers!!

my name is Dirce Mariani I was born in Brazil Parana and now I鈥檓 living in Oklahoma, around four years a go my daughter decided to move to Brazil and because of that I鈥檓 going to Brazil more often, she lives in Cascavel Parana, living abroad for a very long time I鈥檓 having some difficulties to communicate with Brazilians specially south so I decided to join this group to get to know expats living in Brazil and hear their experiences.

@mariany1, welcome to the forum. I don't think that there are many members in the south but I could be wrong. I would recommend starting new threads with specific questions and I am sure that members will be willing to help.

One common theme among Brazil expats - they are always curious about Brazil and ask many questions.... I think that you now qualify as one too.

According to the southern region states are Paran谩, Rio Grande do Sul, and Santa Catarina.

I'm really grateful this forum exists. I am Ruth, a 32 year old woman from Nottingham, England. I moved to North-east Brazil, Pernambuco, Paudalho in July to live with my Brazilian fiance.

I love it here so far, I am slowly settling in and finding my feet. My Portuguese is coming along ever so slowly though, it helps that I speak French fluently, some words are the same but I sometimes feel impatient with myself. Much as I love it here, I get really horrible waves of nostalgia it aches so much. I miss my friends and family. I wonder how some of you manage homesickness?

I'd love to be able to find a way through this, find my feet and settle here with my fiance. We plan to get married next year 聽 Thanks for reading me.

11/08/24 @Ruth Asidi.聽 Welcome!聽 The homesickness CAN be enormous, especially since Brazil is so remote for many of us.聽 Getting your friends and family onto WhatsApp so you can have voice and video calls for free can help a lot.聽

Some new expats have recently been reporting difficulties in getting married at Brazilian cart贸rios, so you and your fianc茅 should make sure that the cart贸rio that you're going to use knows about your plans, and that all your documents are in order.聽 Pernambuco is a wonderful place -- all the best!

We are both British and have been living on the island of Itamarac谩 for over 17 years. We have often driven through Paudalho when taking the scenic route to Gravata or Caruaru...

I think that there are quite a few members of this site in or near Recife.聽 I also have one foot on the island while the other is still in the US.

Re:聽 homesickness - I have found that there are many expats in the region - all willing to meet for lunch or just to catch up.聽 For instance, I will be in Recife in December.聽 And I will be sure to meet Peter and a few other expats there too....

Hi Ruth! Welcome aboard. I'm just up the back roads from Paudalho in Campina Grande. I pass through Paudalho often on my way to Recife (the "shortcut" on some pretty amazingly bad, but fun, roads). My family has family friends in Paudalho although they are all getting pretty old and we hardly see them any more.

On nostalgia, my partner and I just got back from a month+-long visit to the USA. I've been in-country here for 15 years and a regular visitor to Brazil for 43 years and am completely cured of nostalgia for the USA. Still, it's important to hang on to our origins and I look at it as an added-value kind of thing. I love visits to the USA to get my fill of those things one misses but "home" is Brazil. I hope that you find a way to get there.

Paudalho is situated nicely for access to many interesting features of the nordeste. I'm sure that each expat in the region can attest to their favorite aspects. Culture is rich here. Your fianc茅 will surely point out his favorite things-to-do but if you ever run short, just ask.

@Ruth Asidi Glad you made the trip. I actually live really North in Ceara so apparently, we are the state above yours and I actually live very close to the top of the state...6 hours west of Fortaleza, 20 minutes from Jericoacoara.

Almost my entire family lives here, except my 24year old daughter who lives in the area my wife and I used to live in; however, she is a Brazilian Citizen and comes here often so I cannot give you any advice on being homesick.

As far as family goes, I can tell you that before my father passed at 99 my daughter and I created a 30 minute documentary of his life during his 95th birthday party with the whole family participating in it. Even though he is not with us anymore I can watch it on his birthday and Father's Day to remember him by.

@kellermanjm Welcome Abroad. @abthree, can back me up on this. My wife and I were married in MD. before I came to Brazil to for my Permanent Residency. One thing we did not do, which you may need to do is register your marriage at the Brazilian Consulate before you come to Brazil.

I have just discovered this site so I decided to participate. I am from the Czech republic and I decided to move to Brazil in 2011. Now I have been moving to Salvador. Moving to Salvador I am quite curious about number of Europeans (or foreigners) living there. Maybe this is the right place to start. It seems that the community is not so small.

Hi Alesiso! Just the other day I wandered to the bottom of the Expat members selection under the MORE drop-down where I saw that Salvador da Bahia has 490 members. I don't know how accurate that is and I'm just guessing that most of those people hardly login to Expat. Still - that's what it says.

I just got back from Salvador. I love that place. It has a certain magic unique among the great diversity of so many Brazilian regions. I hope that you find it meets all of your expectations.

Thought I had posted here already, but it appears I have not and have just been lurking all this time...

I'm married to a Brazilian since 2005.聽 She's been retired for a bit, and I just retired in October.

We have an apartment in Recife for a little over a year now.

She has a lot of family here, including a 4 year old granddaughter, and visits a lot more frequently than I have.

My visits have been once a year, but now that I'm retired that's going to be 3-4 times a year, for 6 weeks at a time.聽 Bouncing back and forth between Recife and middle TN (Nashville area) in the US.聽

I started another post asking if anyone in the Recife/Itamaraca area would like to meet up between now and Jan 18 when I go back to TN.
