Renewing your USA passport

NewBrazil

If you choose not to renew your USA passport. You have permanent residency in Brazil. If you only wanted to travel and live in Brazil do you need a passport. If when you renew your passport do they require Tax information for both Brazil and USA. The question is do you need a passport to live in Brazil or just a residency card.

Cross-border paperwork can be confusing.

In Brazil, your CRNM residency card covers local ID and domestic flights; international trips usually require a valid passport. Caveat: U.S. citizens must use a U.S. passport for U.S. travel, and serious IRS debt can halt issuance. U.S. renewal does not ask for Brazil or U.S. tax returns; filing duties may still apply.

Next steps:

• Check your CRNM validity and address update.

• Keep your U.S. passport current for emergencies and re-entry.

• Confirm U.S. tax and FBAR/FATCA obligations with an advisor.

If you have a past IRS tax issue then should you go in person to the US Consult to renew your passport. The Tax issue being not paying in full a past tax. But it was in progress of  being resolved.

if your in Fortaleza they have a US consulate. I made a appointment to take my renewal for a passport and card. You can use a international credit card or Reals cash. Plus you will have to pay postage. They send it to Recife it then goes to Washington DC USA. They said it takes 6 to 8 weeks. I will do a update after my visit to the US Consulate.

01/19/26 I went through the same process at the US Consular Agency in Manaus that @NewBrazil did at the one in Fortaleza.

I just started my passport renewal process. I got a appointment at the US Consulate in Fortaleza. Went there January 26, 2026 the woman was very friendly and made the process very easy she was great. Just a note you need to have the 2 pages with photo filled out with your passport. Just my luck she had a problem with contacting with Washington. Since there was a server snowstorm happening at this time. I was prepared with cash which she had told me to have just in case my credit card didn’t work. The good news is your application is sent from Fortaleza to Recife Consulate in Diplomatic bag. She also gave me SEDEX instructions which could be done on line. Here my Luck complete this on Tuesday but the document would not be sent to Recife till Thursday. Now what next OH the US Government is shutting down on Friday. So here I am waiting to get SEDEX  confirmed when they will send the documents. Which I already been told will take 6 to 8 weeks. 😳

My final update about my passport and card. Just received both at my place. March 4 got my tracking number followed it. Saw it moved from Recife to Fortaleza on March 6. Watched it sit in the post office central till today March 9. Was delivered at 11:45 from the website tracking site. I checked and it was here everything was there my old , new passport and passport card. To revisit The whole process I went to the Consulate in Fortaleza first with my paperwork. Laura was great she checked my paperwork and pointed to anything I may have missed. I paid for it there she told me to bring cash in case there was a problem with the credit card. It turned out the website was down because there was a snow storm in Washington. So I paid in cash thank Laura for her tip to bring cash. This was on January 26 she told me it would go to Recife on the 28. I got a email telling me my passport and card had been processed in Washington on February 10,2026. But no tracking number I did get a email from Recife Consulate my passport and card arrived. It was in Recife on February 27 I could pick it up or send SEDEX. I had already paid for SEDEX . I called SEDEX they told me the Consulate had to contact them first. It was on March 4 I got the confirmation number from SEDEX got delivered on March 9, 2026. Just a note I got this done during the government shutdown don’t know if this caused a problem. My recommendation go to the Consulate in your area if possible when paying and sending your documents. I feel this help moved my process much sooner and smoother. Hope this helps
