Vehicle tax/registration

Kurterino

I purchased a used scooter in January 鈥25 and registered it in my name, at which point I also paid the tax and/or registration fee. I鈥檓 guessing that for 2026 I will have to renew the registration and/or pay the tax for the new year, and I don鈥檛 know how this works. I have the app e-titulo where my scooter is listed, and everything seems to be up to date, I can鈥檛 see anything that would allow me to pay whatever I have to pay. Will it appear in this app soon? Or will I get a bill at home, in the mail?

Btw, based on my experience, I wouldn鈥檛 recommend to buy a used vehicle, certainly not one that鈥檚 more than a couple of years old. Maybe there are exceptions if you know the seller well and he鈥檚 trustworthy, but from what I have seen, older vehicles are badly maintained, if at all. My little scooter has been a money pit, and I decided to cut my losses next time it has a problem, and get a new one instead. Maybe a seminovo is acceptable, but I鈥檓 not sure if saving a few hundred dollars is worth the risk.

As most everything vehicle related is based on what state you live in it would be helpful if you could share which state your scooter is registered in.

I didn鈥檛 know that, my bad. It鈥檚 in Bahia. Also, I mixed up the apps, where I mentioned e-titulo, I should have written Carteira digital, an app which lists everything vehicle related, like your driver鈥檚 license and your vehicle title.

This post is a few weeks old, but yesterday my mechanic explained to me how it works (eg how to renew the registration for a vehicle).

Apparently (and i haven鈥檛 done it yet, but will do it probably this week), you can go to either Bradesco Bank or Banco de Brasil, where you have to show them your Renavam number (this number is on your registration document, if you have the CNH app installed you鈥檒l find it there as well). Again according to my mechanic, with this number they will tell you how much you owe for the yearly registration and you can pay it right there and then.

Three caveats: 1) this is for the state of Bahia, other states might have other ways of doing it.

2) It seems that Bradesco only offers this service for their customers. My mechanic said it might work if you go there with someone who is a customer, but he wasn鈥檛 sure. However, according to him, Banco de Brasil has no such requirement. I will be able to confirm shortly.

3) This is only to renew an existing registration. If you intend to newly register a used vehicle, you have to go an office called Emplacadora. Beware, the seller must initiate the transfer in your name, which he did directly on his smartphone and sent me the receipt to Whatsapp. You also need a document with the signature of the previous owner, which can sometimes be a problem, particularly if you buy it from a used vehicle dealer. They tend to not transfer the vehicle in their name, and might have problems locating the previous owner by the time they resell the vehicle. This was a problem for me, thankfully the Emplacadora did the transfer anyway, albeit for a 鈥渟pecial fee鈥. Once that was solved, they did the necessary paperwork in less than 30 minutes, I had to pay all of the fees right away, and they sent me to an inspection station, in my case about 30 minutes away. There, an inspector checked my scooter for聽 basic functionality (mostly lights and blinkers, he didn鈥檛 even drive it). It did look ok though, so maybe if it looks like a piece of junk, the inspection is more thorough)聽 聽You don鈥檛 get new plates, I guess the plates stay with the vehicle forever.

if I can add another 鈥渨arning鈥: be very careful if you buy a used vehicle. First off, you have to check for any outstanding fines and registration fees. If there are any, you will have to pay all of them before you can register your vehicle. Second, a lot of used vehicles here haven鈥檛 been maintained well, or not at all. Be prepared to change a lot of parts if you want your vehicle to be safe and functional. Personally I wouldn鈥檛 do it again, I would have been better off buying a new bike from a dealer. Also they would probably have assisted me in registering it, which isn鈥檛 a huge deal, but still very convenient.

I hope these infos are useful for other expats who like to have a vehicle. Other than the aforementioned problems, I鈥檓 very pleased to have a scooter. I鈥檓 using it mostly for getting groceries. I鈥檝e done a couple of drives on highways, and this is quite stressful and I try to avoid it. I鈥檝e been driving (a lot) in Vietnam and Cambodia, and it鈥檚 way more stressful here, mostly because the majority of vehicles are cars. Also Asians might not be the most competent drivers, but they seem to me way more relaxed than Brazilians. I avoid driving after dark and on weekends, those are the worst hours.

In Pernambuco, (and therefore I guess all states), if you go to your state DETRAN website you can download the bill for your annual car taxes, etc (IPVA). Mine is Detran-PE, and once you have identified yourself, it is very easy to print and pay... In fact I just did mine this morning...!

You will have the option to parcel over 10 payments, or pay in one discounted lump...

Thanks a lot. Of course I tried to get it done immediately, managed to log in and found my vehicle based on the RENAVAM, and after some clicking around, I did see an amount to pay (235R$), except no further information, no Pix number or anything. Everything seems to be fine, no outstanding fines or fees, maybe I鈥檓 just cursed. Is there something obvious I might have overlooked, or do i just have to keep trying? (that has happened to me before, in a totally different context,聽 that something that hadn鈥檛 worked, all of a sudden worked lol).

@Kurterino

Im replying to myself, because I might have solved the problem (I can鈥檛 say for certain yet, I鈥檒l see the next few days, hopefully. First problem was that even though I have a gov.br account, I didn鈥檛 have one for Bahia (ba.gov.br). Once I created this, I noticed that apparently, for whatever reason, my registration for 2025 was paid, but not the IVPA for 2025, which would have been due in August 25, according to the ba.gov.br website. So when I finally managed to get to a pagamento page, it only let me print out a boleto for the IVPA 2025 (believe, I have tried multiple times, that鈥檚 the only option I had. So, since this was only 54 Reais, i decided to go ahead and get a bolero for this amount. And that worked, which really lifted my spirits, since I had been tinkering around for well over an hour by this point. So now that I paid this, I鈥檓 hopeful that once the paiement is recorded in the system, I鈥檒l be able to print a boleto for whatever is due for the year 2026. In the meantime, all I can do is wait鈥nd hope.

However, it鈥檚 really weird that during all this time, whenever i checked the status of my vehicle, nothing indicated that I had the IVPA 鈥25 still to pay. But maybe it was because i didn鈥檛 have an account yet on ba.gov.br? Whatever, I鈥檓 hopeful that after many more hours of swearing at my screen, I鈥檒l eventually be able to pay all that is due鈥.

I noticed that during my last payment process the Android Aplicatico CNH do Brasil only showed changed status of payments AFTER I signed out of the app and then logged back in.

Let鈥檚 say I can鈥檛 get a boleto for 2026, for whatever reason, from the internet app. Would/should the local emplacadora be able to resolve this, or would I have to go to the nearest DETRAN office?

It could be that you are too early for the 2026 boleto, so check back again in a few days/weeks and see if it has been created then...

Kurterino

Since I鈥檝e written so much about this story, I think it鈥檚 only right to tell you how it finally ended. So after having paid the Ivpa聽 for 2025,聽 I鈥檝e waited a few days, and today I logged into the DETRAN site again (ba.gov.br) and tried to pay my registration for 2026. Lo and behold, this time I got a boleto for the tax on the very first try (it鈥檚 183 R$ for a 125cc scooter, here in Bahia). I paid it immediately, but I reckon it will take some time until it appears on the CNH app. No biggie, in the not very likely event that I should get stopped at a checkpoint, I do have the boleto and the comprovante on my cellphone.

The one thing I don鈥檛 get is that apparently, the IVPA is due sometime in the middle of the year (July/August), yet I never received any kind of notification about it, and the status of my vehicle in the CNH looked fine, there was nothing about the tax not being paid. And since I have a friend who uses the scooter regularly for short trips, I have checked frequently its status, in order to make sure that he won鈥檛 have problems.

Of course, this year I will know that I鈥檒l have to log in to DETRAN myself in July/August and make sure to pay it before the end of the year. Still, it鈥檚 either a bizarre system, or there is (or was) something about my situation that wasn鈥檛 quite right, and this year I鈥檒l receive a notification in time. It鈥檚 possible since I鈥檝e owned this vehicle only since January 2025. I鈥檒l see.

Thanks for your help.

EDIT: It鈥檚 181.13, not 183. And this is without the IVPA, if I understand it correctly. That鈥檚 another 54 or 55 Reais.
