Hi all Ex Pats: need advice before I move there

Hi, I'm considering living and working in Rio next year and hoped I could meet one or two of you already doing that. Maybe you've got some tips for me, or some warnings! It would be great to meet up for a coffee and a chat. I'm visiting Brasil from 15聽 Jan to middle of Feb 2011 to try and get a taste for the place. I'm not sure of exact dates I'll be in Rio, but if you fancy helping me out, I will let you know when I'm in Rio in the next few days or so. Maybe I can bring something British which you're desperately missing?!

Be careful.聽 Are you making a job transfer?聽 Do you have a job already in the bag?聽 You were not specific.

Finding gainful employment is first: illegal if you do not have the proper visa, and second: extreamly difficult if you don't have an advance hook up.

Not trying to be negative, but the employment market is really tough for non-Brazilians.

Perhaps you could be more specific.

you for sure want to live in Rio or is all of Brazil open to you? unless you already have a job, i suggest you look for something in Sao Paulo state as it's where you are more likely to find a job, especially with an American company (since you speak English). also, there is more to Brazil than Rio, if you're here for a month consider exploring areas like Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte and if you work with technology, Manaus! or just come to Sao Paulo. hehe.

Like Jim said, it's very hard to find a job without connections, do you speak Portuguese? and if you're thinking about teaching English, it's tough, low pay and you'll have a lot of competition in Rio. Also on that consider a larger city or maybe a city with less English natives so your skills are more valued. give us more details!! lets see what british things do we want...i'm not british, but everyone seems to always ask for crunchie bars eh? oh no i know, PG tips! i love that tea
