Hello all, I'm a Canadian approaching retirement age, and I'm considering purchasing a property in Medellin as my retirement home.

My biggest obstacle is my lack of Spanish, so I'll be getting a tutor to help me with this.

Relocating to a new country is daunting, but one that you are not fluent in their local language will be an even bigger task, so I'll be busy working on this in my final years before retirement.

Welcome roscoc to Medellin and I hail from Los Angeles, California (prayers to my LA family and friends experiencing the major fires in Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica) but after exploring everywhere in Colombia since 1990 have made Medellin my home 10 years ago (my first weeks/month long numerous visits to Medellin started in 2010).

It's good your learning Spanish, hats-off to you and let me tell you it will enhance your visit/life here tremendously.

Don't rush into anything, simply come and check out the different regions, cities, pueblos, coastal towns, at various elevations/climate, etc. and see what fits your style.

Me I purchased my apartment 8 years ago in a small pueblo an hour north of Medellin and could not be happier. Also have a car and motorcycle and I travel almost nonstop everywhere in Colombia on road trips.

Here in my pueblo I have local friends by the dozens, I have assimilated as best that this 2 meters tall, long blond haired/green eyed gringo from the beaches of Los Angeles can.

So welcome to Colombia and hope my experience helps with your decision, again take things slowly and fit the right fit.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm planning to travel and visit Medellin in February but just for a week. I'll plan a longer visit in December when I have more time off. I'll be able to see more different areas then.

My wife and I are on the verge of retirement and are getting ready to spend our last years in the warmth, at least the winters. We're from Quebec (Canada) and can't stand the cold and lack of sunshine. 馃槑

We're targeting a Latin American country, but it's a real headache to choose one. Our priority is safety, and a lot of people seem to be talking about how much Colombia has improved.

Of course, there's also the financial aspect... we're not rich (or poor either) and want to spend our precious earned dollars where they won't get stolen like in Canada!

Right now we're exploring 鈥渧irtually鈥�, but once we've settled on a particular country, we'll start visiting in person during the harsh winter months.

We'd like to be close enough to the sea, but not in a 100掳F climate with 100% humidity. 馃槄

I've just discovered this website and am starting to explore the ton of info it seems to have.

Hi my husband and I are completing our papery for our聽 visas鈥�cannot wait!!

I should have told you a bit about ourselves. We are from Florida聽 we look forward to our move, even if our visas don鈥檛 come through we will spend six months in Colombia and possibly 6 months in Chile. We have a dog (our baby) a German shepherd to bring with us. When we visit Medell铆n it is a very dog friendly place. We love the people of Colombia so friendly and nice! Beautiful place. We鈥檝e asked about healthcare we have insurance coverage that covers us in Colombia. We have been retired for 9 years and we have been waiting for our granddaughter to graduate from high school.

so we look forward to the next chapter of our lives.

I understand we are not poor but not rich, we have been to Colombia several times and the people make us feel welcome. We have met and made friends in Colombia

we are in our 70鈥檚 (hard to imagine).

Its one thing for a single person to move, and a completely diffetent ball game for a family with smaller children.

My 2 cents: I'd highly recommend you start learning Spanish right away. Don't worry about not being fluent anytime soon... any Spanish is better than no Spanish 馃槄
