El Niño 2023-24

cccmedia

Ecuador's Secretariat of Risk Management

stated on Thursday that an El Niño weather

phenomenon is underway.

The closer a place is to the coast at low elevation,

the riskier it is in susceptibility to flooding.

has e-published a list

of the Ecuadorian communities designated as

most high-risk by the Secretariat.

Manabí, Guayas (Guayaquil) and the

Galapagos Isalnds are on that endangered list.

The Secretariat indicates that the worldwide

phenomenon has been strengthening in

the Pacific Ocean and will be a threat through

early 2024.

El Niño underway in Ecuador's

most famous archipelago.

Hundreds of miles to the West of the

Ecuadorian mainland in the Pacific Ocean,

there are reports of unusually heavy rainfall

in the Galápagos Islands. It's an early sign

that El Niño weather effects are occurring

already, albeit well offshore from heavily

populated areas.

The reports indicate there is heavy wave action

and unusually warm ocean water in the region.
