Remaining active is essential for a healthy life. Whether you're a sports fan or just looking to get back into shape during your stay in Jakarta, it has no shortage of options. You'll find fitness centers and sports clubs scattered throughout the city to suit every budget and lifestyle.

Running and jogging in Jakarta

Running and jogging are popular activities in Jakarta, but are not recommended within the city limits. Street vendors and parked vehicles often crowd the sidewalks, not to mention motorcyclists. Unless you run very early in the morning, jogging on Jakarta's streets can be challenging and even dangerous at times.

Although Jakarta is not renowned for welcoming joggers, there are great jogging trails throughout the city. If you live in a gated community, let yourself loose in the mornings and evenings, as you please!

Other than that, some apartment complexes have enough space for runners. Otherwise, you can always go to one of the many parks in the city, like Monas, Menteng, Suropati, Ayodya and Cattleya. Lapangan Banteng Park, located in central Jakarta, also has great running trails.

There is one caveat to this, of course. Every Sunday in the city is a car-free day. From 6 am to 12 midday, large parts of Central Jakarta are closed to traffic, and thousands of Jakartans take to the streets to run and cycle. It's an amazing weekly event, and a pleasure to stretch the legs while enjoying the smog-free air and not having to worry about the traffic!

Gyms in Jakarta

To gain access to a wide range of fitness workouts and to attend group classes with professional trainers, turn to gyms, of which there is no shortage in Jakarta. Celebrity Fitness, Gold's Gym and Fitness First are also available in the country for those who are familiar with these well-known franchises.

Gym membership costs vary greatly depending on the type of facilities available and how modern the equipment is. Membership in Jakarta's most exclusive gyms costs between USD 1,000 and USD 3,000 per year. Alternatively, you can hire a personal trainer for about IDR 800,000 per session, or just over USD 47. Some trainers also offer small group sessions.

Fitness centers in Jakarta

In Jakarta, there are several fitness centers offering a wide selection of toning activities, such as yoga, Pilates, and Zumba. Some sports centers and dojos also offer various martial arts classes such as judo, karate, kickboxing, etc.

A monthly subscription typically costs between IDR 400,000 and IDR 600,000 (USD 24 to USD 35). Some studios allow newcomers to pay per session before offering them a subscription. For one session, expect to pay between IDR 50,000 and IDR 150,000 (USD 3 to USD 9).

Sports clubs in Jakarta

Besides the facilities, which may vary from gym to gym, most Jakarta health clubs have tennis courts, indoor fitness centers, swimming pools, futsal courts, running tracks, and badminton and basketball courts.

Sports club memberships usually cost between IDR 800,000 and IDR 2,500,000 (USD 47 - USD 146) per month, depending on the facilities and benefits offered, as well as the number of members.

Furthermore, clubs usually offer special deals and discounts, in particular for families. Be aware, however, that you will have to pay a membership fee, which averages between IDR 500,000 and IDR 3 million per month.

Playing golf in Jakarta

In Indonesia, golf is considered an elite sport and is typically played only by expatriates, but that has been changing in recent years as the sport experiences a surge in popularity. Some local professionals and expatriates are more likely to play golf as part of business meetings and business relationships. It is, therefore, no surprise that Jakarta features many world-class golf courses throughout the city.

Regardless of whether you are a golf enthusiast or play for business, Jakarta's golf courses cater to all kinds of players, from beginners to seasoned professionals. Green fees vary by course, but they generally range from IDR 75,000 to IDR 200,000 on weekdays and from IDR 110,000 to IDR 350,000 on weekends.
