I have never been to Portugal. My children are becoming teenagers and we are just starting to leave France. My son is learning Portuguese, because it is one of the most spoken languages. I have an image of Porto as a splendid city, described, I believe, by Voltaire (in addition to Lisbon). The years may have passed, and they are tumultuous, but if the walls have aged, I imagine that the Portuguese are still as genuinely warm.
