About
I have lived in the USA for 8 years now.
My family and I originally lived in Michigan and just moved to New Jersey two months ago.
Our children are bilingual, because my husband and I speak French at home.
For the children, one arrived at the age of 2 years and 3 months and learning English was more difficult than for our second born in Michigan.
But we made the choice to very quickly enroll our son in kindergarten (here called Preschool). Then during the summer school holidays we had an English teacher at home. At public schools there is an ESL service which allows the Foreign Child to have an English teacher whom he meets during the school day.
It is obvious that adaptation is a challenge but we must not lose sight of the fact that children generally adapt much more quickly than adults.
Then it is necessary to maintain contact with the family remaining in France or elsewhere with Skype for example, or Facetime so that they have their bearings. And that goes for adults too!
In any case, it is a very enriching experience for the whole family that I recommend to everyone who has the opportunity to do it!
Good luck to new expats in their relocation project!
