Hello, I live and work in Bathurst New Brunswick, Support sought for Chaleur Celtic village, parade ground
BATHURST - Bathurst has already played host to the Canada Winter Games and the Acadian Games, now a group of local citizens wants the city to have its own Highland Games.
Coun. Scott Ferguson agreed, saying that the city's largest park, Coronation Park, in the downtown core, could be looked at as a possible site.
He said the idea for a Highland Games festival in Bathurst is one with lots of potential.
"I think it would be very entertaining ... and a good activity to celebrate the Scottish heritage."
Dianne O'Neil of the Chaleur Celtic Village and Parade Ground Project is circulating a petition to garner support for a Highland games in Bathurst starting in 2012.
She indicated that with research showing that 52 per cent of the immigrants who came to North America were of Celtic descent, that subsequently translates into large numbers of people who are interested in Celtic events.
O'Neil said the Chaleur event would ideally be a three-day affair involving pipe bands, Highland dancing, athletic competitions and concessions.
O'Neil, a retired federal employee, is currently circulating a petition to garner public support for the Chaleur Celtic Village and Parade Ground Project.Financial calculations are still being worked out, but she said grants would be sought from the different levels of government.
O'Neil said the support of Brian Kenny, the city's Liberal MLA and the province's former tourism minister, has been enlisted.
The petition for the Chaleur Celtic Village and Parade Ground Project is available online at www.chaleurcelticvillage.ca
