New Mexico, USA
I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico beginning in 1998. I lived in this city longer than anywhere else and almost feel as though I grew up here. My livelihood included waiting tables at TGIF, working as an educational assistant for Albuquerque Public Schools, and most recently seven years with Southwest Airlines as a customer service agent.
I was recently offered a buyout package with Southwest, in July of 2009. This coincided with my graduation from UNM in 2009. I'm not employed because I'm getting ready to do some extensive traveling and professional development. I'm headed to Guatemala in less than a week where I'll spend some time working on gaining fluency in Spanish. After that it's San Jose, Costa Rica for a TEFL-TESOL certificate program. From there I'll work my way down to Buenos Aires, Argentina, possibly teaching and volunteering along the way
Most of the time I've lived here it's been between the university-downtown area. Albuquerque is known for being one of the most bicycle friendly cities around and since I lived here, I've been able to eliminate my dependency on a car. There is a great arts community and a diverse population. I like the milder days of spring and fall, and there can be some perfect winter days.
I have a fair complexion and don't like the intense sun/heat.
This city would be vastly improved by the addition of a trolley or light rail system. Outside of the central corridor of the university-downtown area, the city is poorly designed. There's too much traffic, sprawl, and cookie cutter subdivisions. Though Albuquerque is rated a top city for cycling, the people who chose the bicycle as a primary form of transportation are a minority.
