Studied Abroad for final year of college (I was an older student as I put myself through school over many years while working full time as a professional)
It gave me the opportunity to travel around Europe easily and to be exposed daily to beautiful architecture, famous art & museums and forced me to live outside of my comfort zone.
The economy (lots of educated people working low level jobs because they couldn't get anything better), the mind-set (back in 2005 the mind set was very very far behind what I was used to regarding things like immigrants, homosexuality, etc), the onslaught of crowds almost every month of year
