I am an Educator who wants his students to know the world, the good and the bad, and use that knowledge to broaden their horizons.

I love that the people generally try their best not to get in anyone's way or cause trouble for anyone. The people, in Kansai especially tend to try and keep the mood light and humorous which can be good if you like things upbeat and positive. Compared to other parts of Japan and Asia, the hierarchy is not so rigid, or at least it appears that way.
It is very difficult to eat healthy and balanced while out of the house. I am a big foodie and after living in Korea I got used to a balanced diet with plenty of vegetables. The meals in Osaka tend to be heavy on starches and fats and low in fiber. Even when shopping at the grocery store, the selection of vegetables is smaller than what I was used to back "home" in Korea. I found that family ties are not as tight as what I was used to either. That makes it a challenge as an Educator when trying to motivate young people to make serious and important life decisions. Contrary to what is seen in many parts of East Asia, many parents seem to prefer a more "hands off" approach to child rearing. While I find most workers in the customer service industry to be very kind, I also find that the practical services actually available to the customer are extremely limited.

Working at a private high school.
I didn't have much time to meet locals but I found that they were easy to get along with.
I sometimes found myself being treated as a guest all the time.

Did a lot while there, learning the culture and language while teaching English.
I enjoyed the genuine nature of the people who I became friends with. The people can sometimes seem standoffish and cold or even rude from a distance but tend to be very kind and decent when getting to know them personally. Unlike many nations today, Koreans still seem to prefer their traditional food over foreign or western foods. With the exception of its very high sodium content, I find traditional Korean food to be exceptionally balanced and healthy. The majority of traditional Korean food is plant based with a few seafood items. Although meat is popular, it isn't typically seen as something that needs to be eaten at each meal or even everyday. The food was the best I have ever had and it is still my all time favorite. It is easy to eat healthy even when out.
In general, systems are not very well organized. The people are very hard working and dynamic but their executions lack sufficient planning and preparation. This is often knowingly. This can sometimes lead to public safety hazards. People are sometimes unaware or unconcerned with their surroundings or the people in them, especially in the big cities. This can be a cause of tension between people. The hierarchy, while actually beneficial in many cases, sometimes stifles open communication and can be a source of great stress to those lower on the "totem pole".

Has anyone here lived in South Korea too? by bunyukja

Has anyone here currently living in Japan also lived in South Korea for at least a year? If so, what are your thoughts? Do you miss anything? Is there anything that you could do without? How was the transition for you?

bunyukja

And to answer your question, yes I have been to Korean Town in Osaka. It isn't too far from me. Read More
