My expat journey

Bangkok, Bangkok, Thailand

Shanghai, Shanghai Shi, China
I have my own integrated / digital marketing company, which I still own and run
Advertising/digital marketing
It's quite full on work-wise and socially. Lots of opportunities (at the time)
Infrastructure / building quality can make summers and winters quite unbearable.
The ever changing visa criteria and great 'unknowns'
It's quite expensive.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
I ran an american advertising agency

Liked a lot about the place, the food, the people, it's not so big as to get around, and everyone pretty much speaks English. It's a little bit more relaxed, work-wise, than perhaps you might be used to
Local politics and work ethic

Seoul, South Korea
I ran an american advertising agency for a few years

Liked a lot about the place, the food, the people, the work ethic, the work hard, play hard mentality. Some wacky unusual experiences most months!
not so many people speak English (which is my problem, not theirs), Seoul is a lively, expensive city but there's not much greenery at all really. Roads and infrastructure are difficult to navigate. Certain foods are very expensive and / or difficult to get hold of (cheese!). The winters are incredibly cold!

Hong Kong, Hong Kong
What didn't I get up to and do in HK?? Water skiing before work in Clearwater Bay. Too many late nights in LanKwaifong and Wanchai. Football pretty much every weekend. And a ton of public holidays. 267 islands, nice beaches. Hikes. Fine Dining. A plethora of boozers of all shapes and sizes. A great airport to escape to most of Asia which is not so far away. The place is full on and buzzes

Everything
Not much really. I really miss it

Unfortunately, due to superstition, ying yang, and bad press, many Thais, that I know, do not want to be vaccinated. Where I live there are several 'walk-in' vaccination stations that have been open for months, I have yet to see them busy, ... Read More

COVID-19 and expatriation in Thailand by Lo茂c
Hello everybody, The COVID-19 crisis inevitably impacts Thailand, between closed airports or periods of containment in some cities or even the entire country . We would like to hear from you during this unusual period, to find out what the ...
I've lived and worked in Thailand now for 10 years on and off. Several things resonate, personally, and professionally, at this time: Too slow, too soft The government was way too slow and not harsh enough about introducing a lock-down (and ... Read More
TM 30 form, what do you think? by Anne-Lise Mty
Hello everyone, I hope you are all well. Have you heard of the expat petition regarding the TM 30 form? We have just written a piece on the matter and would love to hear what you think of the enforcement of this section of the 1979 and the petition ...
The issue whether we like it or not is more about consistency across all contact points, as opposed to catching different moods and individual interpretations within immigration and / or the local police. The main issue though is that they have ... Read More
